I'm not saying he was great, or even a natural. But one thing that he wasn't was scared.

After 4 years of being repeatedly castrated by McDermott, he was absolutely terrified of his own shadow by the time he left here.

Maybe it was a poor pick as a result of failed scouting, but the Bills coaches did nothing but make the whole situation worse.

I don't understand this entire saga with Elam. The coaches do not have a track record of being unduly harsh on any player. To think that they essentially tortured Elam, the fan base and themselves by holding on to him seems out of character.

Something doesn't add up for me. Perhaps you see more than I do?

I dunno if you noticed our gm does better in late rounds so I hope he doesn't lol

I get that is his history however we are clearly a contending team given the past few years and are having an excellent free agency this year so how many 4th, 5th, etc. round draft picks are really going to crack this very very solid line up?

On the other hand, in this draft grabbing 2nd rounders who start in their 1st or 2nd year on a contending team is very doable.

Gives them some options for sure.  If there is someone that they really like at back of 3rd they have ammo to move up.  Alternatively, they could spend those 5ths to move each of their 4ths earlier in that round.

Or, since their hit rate in the 5th and 6th seems to be pretty high overall maybe just use all the picks.

I have two words to say to you:

Aaron Maybin

Does anyone else remember Reuben Gant?  Or Eric Flowers?  Or Tom Ruud?

I have no idea what may have gone on behind the scenes; just that the difference between the guy they drafted and the guy they traded is genuinely stunning.

Good for him. He gets a fresh start in Dallas. Good for us. We get another 5th, which was more than I thought we would.

One thing I'll say is I hated how we used him in the AFCCG. We spent two drives playing him way back off the line out of fear and Mahomes had the easiest reps of his life just casually throwing the ball underneath him. That was horrific coaching for sure. If you're forced to play a backup at least let him play a style that he's comfortable with.

Whatever happened, it was a complete top to bottom organizational failure that this regime has otherwise avoided which is why it sticks out. A rare case where the front office and the coaching staff were not on the same page.

I didn’t understand why Ingram didn’t get put in rather than Elam? Speed?   Ingram had 2 ints early in the season and hasn’t been destroyed like Elam.  Just puzzling

or Al Cowlings?  (actually we all remember AC but not for anything he did on a football field)

I don't know. The coaching staff was seemingly totally unprepared for the possibility that a recently concussed CB might get knocked out of the game. If Elam looked like a nervous wreck in that game, that was a direct reflection of his coaches. They were intimidated and not able to handle any kind of adversity.

Ya he's up there too, but at least he saw the field

My recollection is he had zero sacks for the Bills in two seasons.  Got his first sack as a Jet, against the Bills.

Good.  Now bring back Dane Jackson, a higher end FA CB, and a CB in the top 3 rounds.

Buffalo now has 8 picks in the first 5 rounds.  Pretty awesome.

Knee jerk reaction is YES! to Dane.... however, makes me nervous we'd settle back into passive zone again.  Was hoping with that Secondary Coach from the Pats being added, it was part of a major philosophy change.  We can still bring back Dane and overhaul philosophy, but we won't know till the ball starts flying again.... even then, nervous we could try for a bit, have learning curve hit  and whimper back to 'ole steady.

Moving Elam, while the right move (for both parties), caught my attention, and is making me second guess the man2man a lot of us are hoping to see more off.

Admittedly, we can get rid of Elam and still add m2m.  But it muddys the water on trying to get an early prediction

In a reserve roll yes. Dane knows

the system and we are big time thin at corner.

Dane Jackson is an aggressive, physical CB if he is allowed to be.

He has no problems with fighting you in a phone booth and teh only thing that will make him passive is the scheme.
