I didn’t read this whole thread,,  is Elam the biggest bust draft pick on Beane’s resume?

The amazing thing about this situation is that the Bills actually traded UP in round one to draft this cornerback. Then again, maybe it wasn't so amazing.

ESPN graded this trade as a B+ for us and a B- for the Cowboys.  We got the first of three Dallas comp picks in the 5th so it’s really an early 6th (better than a release).  
 

On what may be an ironic note (based on the scarcity of viable “starting” CB2s still available), they also equated this trade to 2023 when the Falcons traded Jeff Okudah (pick 3 of the 1st round in 2020) for a 5th (imagine the anger on TSW if that was us!).  Seems clear that one our top three picks will be the future CB2 (and/or heir apparent to Benford if we don’t extend him).

I get what you're saying but it's hard for me to say anything congratulatory about Beane for a 1st round pick that never contributes and then gets dumped for a 5th and a 6th.

I am with you. But I do give them credit for actually moving on instead of trying to force their pick to work. Other than that, this whole saga was a massive failure of evaluation and drafting

I hear ya but that sin was committed 4 years ago and the blow is somewhat softened with Benford being a late round draft pick that ended up being what we wanted Elam to be.

 

And for where we are now, it was good that he was able to recoup some draft value and take off $2.5M from the cap

Probably, but everybody has a worst. He’s not alone, but I’d love to have known what the scouting on him looked like. Who was the lead scout, what did he think, and what is he doing today. We all make mistakes, but….

Good for both sides…. Bills need the cap and roster space…. Elam needs a fresh start. Good luck to him, and I hope we have better luck on whomever we draft with those picks.

I haven’t read the thread but I hope someone pointed out that if Beane had taken Benford in the 1st round and Elam in the 6th, he wouldn’t have been able to get ***** for Elam.

We gave up pick (6th) 204 and got back (5th) 170.  
 

Here are our picks as of now (post-Elam trade):

 

Round 1: No. 30 overall

Round 2: Nos. 56 (from Vikings through Texans), 62

Round 4: Nos. 109 (from Bears), 132

Round 5: Nos. 169 (Compensatory Selection), 170 (from Cowboys), 173 (Compensatory Selection)

Round 6: Nos. 177 (from Giants), 204 (from Lions through Browns), 206

 

I would love to see Beane move some 4ths into the 3rd.  He’s got plenty of spots to move around because we don’t have room for all those picks.

WTF? Another epic fail for Beane. He drafted this bust in the first round. Beane has so many fails that have been covered up by an outstanding QB.
