Simon Posted March 12 Posted March 12 This debacle is one of the few examples where I think our coaching staff absolutely screwed up a player's development. In his last game he was an utterly scared, confused mess, which he wasn't as a rookie. He was a worse player when he left here than he was when we drafted him. 6 24 Quote
JoeF Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Its likely one of Dallas' comp picks (so not 149 but 170 or 171)... Quote

I have to wonder how bad our previous DB coach had to do with that? Quote
Low Positive Posted March 12 Posted March 12 You know this board will melt down when Elam gets an INT in Dallas. 1 2 Quote

I love any good reason to bag on McD, but I think this was just on the individual player. I do blame Beane and McD for panic picking him in the first place. 3 1 Quote

Steptide Posted March 12 Posted March 12 What an absolute bust. Honestly may be one of the worst 1st round picks ever 2 1 Quote
LEBills Posted March 12 Posted March 12 I thought we would have to Brock Osweiler him and give up the better pick. Much better return than I was expecting. Nice little cap savings with this. Good luck Kaiir Quote

When you go from looking competent and unafraid as a rookie with upside to looking like a terrified train wreck 4 years later, that is not on just the player, imo. 1 2 Quote
gonzo1105 Posted March 12 Author Posted March 12 Of course Dallas has 19 5th rounders and the Bills have 19 6th rounders 1 Quote

sven233 Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Happy for both sides here. We get a couple more picks to work with and Elam gets a fresh start. Look, it stinks that is didn't work here. But sometimes that is going to happen. In this case, I don't think it was for lack of effort on either side. I know Elam worked hard to get better and I know the team tried to get him to be the player they wanted him to be. But in this case, I think the scheme fit was just so bad compared to the player's strengths that they just couldn't make it work. It's frustrating to invest such a high pick into a player and not have it work out. But the fact is, he wasn't the original plan. KC did what they needed to do to go up and get their guy and Beane failed to prevent that from happening. Hopefully this is a lesson learned by Beane that if you have someone you want, and the drop off is fairly substantial even just a few picks later, you have to be proactive and go get the guy you want. He's done it a few times, but maybe not enough. Maybe the picks he got in this trade can help make that move up this season if there is someone they have targeted a few picks higher than 30. Go get your guy. Good luck to Elam, though. Fresh start and I hope he makes the most of it. 3 Quote
DapperCam Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Hope he can figure it out. Seems like he has the talent to be an NFL CB, just couldn't quite put it together with our scheme and coaches. Quote
