Bills would save $12M moving on from Jones and Epenesa

I mentioned in another thread but I'm surprised the Bills added three D lineman ahead of a deep D line draft. We now have 9 guys I would expect to make the team, so we are running out of spots. 

 

Moving on from both seems like a no brainer. Jones, I'm not sure why he hasn't been cut already. AJ makes sense to hold onto as we may be able to get a draft pick for him post June 1, maybe a 2026 5th or something. 

 

Can add another cheap DT in FA and then draft a DE and DT rounds 1-4. Get some youth with upside in here. Makes sense to me.

Listening to WGR this morning, they think Beane is trying to move past as much dead cap space this year as they can, and not kick the can down the road.  They believe that's why Von wasn't restructured or a Post June 1 cut.

Both are expiring contracts, just let them play it out this year and hopefully with AJE if he has a nice season in a continued rotational role a team will give him a contract and it will give the Bills a comp pick. Also Bosa and Larry O are often banged up. Larry O doesn't miss many games but he plays hurt, always good to have depth options when you have injury prone players.

There’s a decent chance of this happening.  I feel that so much happens on the draft. 
 

Depending on who they take it also puts Javon Solomon and DeWayne Carter in weird positions.  I don’t think they’ll be released but adding rookie DT/DL’s could really jeopardize their game day roster spot

epenesa cap $7.5, dead $4.1, save $3.4

 

your not replacing either with what you save

I wouldn't worry about cost or dead cap.  Jones seems to be losing to father time.

 

I guess I would have him come to camp and then see how he looks.

If he was released after June 1st Beane could use his $5M is cap for the season.

If he looks good you keep him for the season.  He would cost $3.7M in void dead cap next year regardless.

Why is everyone so down on AJE? Last three years: 6 sacks, 6 sacks, and 6.5 sacks. That’s only as a situational guy, with not really a lot else on the D-line.

 

yet a lot of folks wanted to break the bank for Sweat, who played with three elite d-linemen and over the last few years had 8 sacks, 6.5 sacks, 11 Sacks, 7.5 sacks.

 

Let’s keep AJE and draft two monster interior DL in this deep draft. I am willing to bet AJE will easily become a 8-11 sack guy too playing next to some really good interior guys.

I can completely envision Beane spending up to the cap until training camp and then letting one or both of those guy go (or leveraging a restructure) and that's how they get the change to handle in season transactions

I mostly agree and think he's on the roster but at a certain point we have roster spot limits. If someone comes in and blows the coaches away in camp I can see AJE as a potential casualty

No, that restructure covers the moves we've already made. I'm pretty sure our big spending is done. From here on out it's baseline starters and veteran depth.

Only reason to cut Jones now is to give a chance to sign on elsewhere---out of respect to player.

 

AJE isnt going anywhere before camp.  He's still a valuable piece, maybe he's traded if it becomes a numbers game...but not expecting that.

 

You hold Daquon until after draft, gives you options.  He saves $1.8m, which isn't much at all (<1% of cap).  Point is, you make the moves after ensuring you grab players and sav8ngs on cap isnt substantial enough (unless being courteous to a player that you 100%know will be cut)

I was hoping Beane would strong arm DQ into a paycut this offseason, as he's done with other underperforming overpaid players in the past. Maybe that option is still on the table.

Seems like Beane's method was to only restructure as he needs the $$ so wonder if something else now going on?
