I'm with you on Carter.  I'm not writing him off but after his injury, he was getting pushed around like he was a lightweight.  That's why he was a healthy scratch the remaining of the year.

I think this greatly increases the odds of a WR high in the draft. Based on their contracts it seems like we have 6 locks for the dline

My first thought is this is a better version of Philips. He can play both spots and will be critical depth and rotational player.

That’s usually what happens with guys who stop the run unless he’s getting TFLs or Sacks Dlineman don’t get a lot of clout. 
 

I wonder if the idea is to work Carter some at 1T. Before the injury Carter looked solid stacking and shedding guys in the run game.

He had his best sack numbers in a 4-3 as a 3 tech. I wonder if the idea is to make Carter both a 3 and a 1 as the last DL on the roster. Lotta questions on fit for this one but they obviously have a plan 

 

I don't expect us to be a hybrid defense at all, but we're grabbing versatile players/can play multiple spots along the front.  Not unlike most years, ie: Smoot LY, just better guys now IMO.

 

Watched Larry alot with Steelers, he can generate pressure up the middle alot more consistently than what we got from Carter/Phillips/Johnson/Jefferson/etc last year.

 

I saw very little "push" from Carter LY, in pass rush.  He played solid against the run prior to injury though.  He's a rotational piece, bounce between a 1 and 3 tech.

 

We need to grab a DT early in draft, and be curious if we cut Daquon who looked like toast LY.

I read he played over the A gap for his first four seasons with Cleveland before switching to the 3 technique in Pittsburgh so maybe he has versatility and can play some 1 technique along with our draft pick (e.g., Grant, Tyliek Williams, Alfred Collins, Omar Norman-Lott, Jordan Phillips (the new one!), CJ West, Stackhouse, Caldwell, etc).

Carter was a rookie DT taken at the end of the third round.  That's the kind of player who takes 2 or 3 years to develop into his best self because he was chosen for his potential.  DT is a tough position because it not only requires young players to learn/improve their techniques but also their opponents.

Easy to disappear when you are taking on multiple blockers. Pressure up the middle would be great if he helps us get it.  
 

for what it’s worth, my Steeler fan friend said “great get with Ogunjobi! He can still play at a high level. Was a cost savings cut unfortunately”.

Yea I agree this doesn’t change anything draft wise. It’s funny right here you quoted I said the same thing about Carter going to the 1T instead of the 3 for the same reasons. I think Beane saw the dominance of Philly and is like okay we’re just going to go with that model

I think towards the end of last season, McD, who has always been a zone guy, figured he had to mix it up a bit with all the nasty wideouts in the AFC.  He certainly was mixing his looks up vs the Ravens and the Chiefs.

I really wish this team would think in terms of tiny LB protection and put 2 Days on the field that are 340lbs. I don’t need those guys to do anything other than occupy blocks. Il let my exterior guys and 2nd level guys make the plays. Just don’t be moved
