How the Bills are stacking up vs contenders and some other teams in FA/trade pickups and losses

I did a little exercise to see how the Bills are doing relative to some other notable teams on their acquisitions and losses.   This list won't include the extensions of their own players, this is a simple look at the pickups and losses.   It is early still but it is a glance at where we stand vs some of these other teams.

Note:  I am getting this data from overthecap so it may not be 100% updated.   Also I am not including players who haven't been picked up in FA as of yet.

Chiefs

Pickups

LT Jaylon Moore (expected to be starting LT)

RB Elijah Moore (expected to be a backup RB)

Losses

RB Samaje Perine (valuable 3rd down back)

LG Joe Thuney (Stud LG who played LT as well)

On balance so far a net negative

Ravens

Pickups

WR Deandre Hopkins (losing gas in the tank)

Losses

LB Chris Hoard (Jag)

CB Brandon Stephens (starting CB but was picked on a lot this past year)

LG Patrick Mekari (Starting LG)

On balance a net negative

Texans

Pickups

WR Christian Kirk (good replacement for Diggs)

IDL Sheldon Rankins (quality depth in rotation)

S Chauncy Gardner-Johnson Jr. (Quality safety)

CB Tremon Smith  (not even a JAG)

WR Braxton Berrios (meh to serviceable slot)

LG Laken Tomlinson (ok starting guard)

LB Nick Niemann (Special teamer)

Losses

LT Laremy Tunsil (very big loss, specially for a team that needs better pass protection)

LG Kenyon Green (starting LG at times but struggled with upside)

Safety Eric Murray (starting safety - ok)

On balance - tough to say with big loss with Tunsil, but other quality pickups (I'd say slight net negative)

Eagles

Pickups

LG Kenyon Green (not a great pickup)

QB Dorian Thompson (downgrade from Kenny Picket)

Losses

DE Josh Sweat (pretty big loss)

Safety Chauncy Gardener Johnson Jr (Decent loss at safety)

QB Kenny Pickett (serviceable backup)

IDL Milton WIlliams (pretty big loss)

LB Oren Burks (eh)

CB Isiah Rodgers (Decent player)

On balance so far a big downgrade

San Francisco

Pickups

CB Tre Tomlinson (jag)

Losses

WR Deebo Samuel (down year but potentially could be very good)

CB Chavarious Ward (good starting CB)

QB Joshua Dobbs (quality depth)

LG Aaron Banks (quality starting LG)

LT Jaylon Moore (Decent to OK LT)

S Talanoa Hufanga (Decent starting S)

RB Elijah Moore (decent depth RB)

On balance   YIKES

And the Bills

Pickups

DE Joey Bosa (upgrade from Von Miller)

DE Michael Hoecht (quality rotation)

WR Josh Palmer (quality WR who will most likely replace Amari Cooper)

Losses

P Sam Martin (serviceable)

WR Mack Hollins (played well for us last year)

On balance a net slight positive.

The Bills seem to be stacking up pretty well against other top teams so far.

Wouldn’t Von Miller be listed as a LOSS?

Not yet, he hasn’t signed with anyone but he highly likely will be gone

While I appreciate that, the Bosa signing seemed to close that door…no?

I would have considered Von a loss since Mar. 16/2022

I think so but this thread is for official losses and pickups.    I didn’t want to go speculating for all the teams who would be retained or lost

I’m not sure I’d include the Niners in the contender category anymore.

Good post.

i hate to say it but i think a sneaky team this year will be New England.

Not to say they will pass the Bills.

But they kind of remind me a bit of the 2019 Bills when Josh was coming into his second year.

In saying that- NE has a lot of work to do to get Maye more weapons

So I guess I’m confused. As of right now, this minute, isn’t Von Miller officially NOT on the Bills?

He’s not.  But Ty Johnson wasn’t either and he was as retained.  I’m getting the data from overthecap.  Which is tabulating those that have signed onto other teams not those in limbo.

Elijah Mitchell is a RB for KC.  Elijah Moore is a FA WR last with the Browns.

Yeah, meant to say Mitchell

If Drake Maye continues to improve, they are going to be a problem.  They look like they have a plan that starts with protecting their QB and giving him some weapons.

They're not executing on that very well... their line was atrocious last year, and they've added 34-year-old Morgan Moses who graded out as the 64th best T in 2024 and Mack Hollins to support Drake Maye.

They've dropped gobs of money on defense, and have acquired some good players, but nobody that really strikes fear.

Chris Godwin was on NFL Network and said he turned down a larger offer to re-sign with the Bucs.  I'd wager it was NE.
