I’d pay an elite pass rusher 30 million and an elite RB 12 million.

It’s all about market.

Sorry, but Cook is a very good back…not great. Great backs last season were Saquon and Henry. Stats and game impact.

If our window to win is now, why not extend Cook to 2-3 year deal?

So who will have a bigger impact?

Bosa or Cook? Because people don't want to pay Cook close to this much money, yet they're fine with giving it to an often injured, about to 30 DE... with a whopping 13 sacks over the last 3 seasons. But yeah, great money spent!

It makes no sense.

They won't miss Cook until he's gone, but I think Beane will get something done.

If I'm Cook, I wouldn't settle for any less than $13M-$14M.

It's always BPA within a frame. What you don't want is a glaring need that results in a panic reach. That's how you get EJ Manuel and Kair Elam.

We have no idea where Elam was on the Bills board.  Kiper had him 41st, but others had a 1st rd grade on Elam.

An example of how boards are different, Kiper had Cook at 99th in the Elam draft.  The Bills took him at 63.  That “reach” worked out pretty well.

You can structure the deal so that he can brag about 13 million but the cap hits are actually 10 million. That's what will happen.

Give it to him in the way of a bonus for all I care, but the tag is $13.6M.  I wouldn't accept anything less AAV.

If Josh Palmer is worth $12M/year, how in the world is James Cook at least not worth that much?

Why should we?

Is he the best back available?

Is his cap number affordable?

It’s all about the $$$.

A player like Saquon or Henry would be a centerpiece for us. That’s not how our offense works. I’d say Ty and Davis could provide enough at the RB position.

I shouldn't have included Elam. I have been arguing for years that Beane has been more unlucky in the the draft than bad. he takes guys about where they are projected. The only reach was Boogie Basham. Even Cody Ford was picked about where he was supposed to be picked. Elam wasn't a reach, he's just an unlucky bust.

He should get that. But I don't care about Pegula cash. I only care about cap hits.

Why mess with a good thing of you don't have to?

Unless we get Hendrickson,  there's no player out there that we break the bank on. We'd have plenty of money for Cook.

This is about winning it all next season.

But Josh Palmer is worth $12M/year? And he’s a #3-#4 WR at best? But we can’t pay a top 10 RB the same money?

Cook will likely score more TDS and produce more yards in 2025 than Palmer by miles..

Our window is now, you can’t let our most deadly weapon on offense not named Josh Allen go..

How does this have anything to do with Cook at all? Anything signed with him would be an extension that wouldn't take effect until the 2026 cap. Bosa's hit will be gone by then.

I was responding to someone saying that it wouldn't be a huge loss if we lost Cook

I don't hate where you're going with this, but you obviously can't compare raw production 1:1 across different positions when formulating cap values. You have to figure how much better Cook is than whoever would replace HIM (plus the cap savings in NOT allocating that AAV to a platoon RB) and compare THAT to how much better Palmer is than whoever would replace HIM (plus the cap savings/difference).

It just seemed like a dumb discussion to me and I should have responded to them and not you. In my defense, I have been erasing ad-hominem attacks from my responses all day and this probably got lost in that process. The amount of posters who don't grasp the basics of the salary cap drives me bonkers.

Just to be clear, the Bills should sign Cook. He is the best non-QB weapon on this team since Diggs and he should be paid. But Bosa's deal has nothing to do with that because it's a 2025 cap hit and Cook's extension would be 2026+ cap hit.

He's under contract, he's not going anywhere.

He's not either. Beane doing silly things shouldn't justify other silly things.

he's still young enough to get healthy in time for a playoff run. When you go deep in the playoffs every year this is the kind of move you have to make to improve your team. I just hope it's not the last of our efforts to generate pressure

Do you really think anyone here takes that into account on any player move?
