From my perspective, I would like having both Benford and Cook extended. In the case of Cook, I don't know what the market is for him. But I'm hoping he finds out and whatever it is it fits Buffalo's budget.

Wouldn’t it be wise to see Benford on the field fully recovered from the injuries late last season before committing to tens of $Ms in guarantees.

Yeah. If there were no health concerns I think he’d have been priority #1 to extend. Top CBs make huge money and he’s in line for that. It makes sense that the Bills would want to wait and see how things go before extending him. It doesn’t have to wait until after the season either. After camp, after 6 games, whenever the Bills are comfortable with his health.

The hold up with Cook has to be his contract demands. They’ll get to an agreeable number - or they won’t. If they don’t by the draft, Beane better cover his rear.

Yes, all makes sense so far, to let our 2nd best offensive player, the only true game breaker, leave this year or next, as he enters his prime.  And create another significant need when they do so.  A 'bold' move...

Instead, I say the Bills are actually smart and sign Cook to a good extension in the next two weeks.

And Benford too, but the Bills do not break the bank to do so in my opinion.

I believe that the Bills will not offer, and Cook would not accept, the 12 million a year contract proposed here, not after Barkley is making 20+ a year now.  Not how it works in the NFL or life. And both Cook and the Bills know it.

You say that Cook wouldn't accept the 12 million a year contract here, "not after Barkley is making 20+ a year now. Not how it works in the NFL," and I think you're correct right up till the last few words.

Why would Cook settle for only 60% of what Barkley is getting? Well, Barkley had 2283 yards from scrimmage this year and Cook had 1267. So, 55.5%. Barkley had 801 snaps and Cook had 485. So Cook had 60.4% of the snaps Barkley had.

Sorry, man, this is exactly how it works in the NFL and the world. You get about 60% of the snaps and about 55% of the production and you get about 60% of the money per year? That's exactly how things work.

Barkley is a workhorse back. Cook is a very fine back, but he is not a workhorse. Someone might pay more, but compared to Barkley, that $12M is not at all unreasonable for Cook. When you look at the three highest paid RBs in AAV, the guys more than a fraction above $12M, they are all workhorses.

I think Benford will get locked up and Cook will not. Cook seems to want top money and he is a 60% on the field RB not an 80% on the field RB.

Cook can’t pass block and it is a huge hole in his game. I love his play otherwise, but I hope Beane does not overpay for a RB.

I disagree obviously, and think it is a near certainty that the Barkley contract changed the game for Cook, the Bills, and the other elite running backs in the league.

An historically big contract does that almost every time, wouldn't you agree?

But, we will soon find out which is the right take, as the Bills should show their cards soon, and  make their decision. Cook may get close to 12 for the first year, but then it is going higher each year, and likely tops off at 15 million soon.  And hopefully with good incentives, like Barkley has.

It looks like a holdout is coming if Cook does not get extended......so I doubt he will happily "play out" the final year of his contract.

I am not sure if the Bills should extend Cook or not, but it seems to be trending toward "Cook gets extension, or Cook becomes a distraction" territory, IMO.

Or Cook is traded territory.

Looks like it’s becoming a play or you don’t get paid scenario to me.

Trade him at that rate.

A concussion isn't like a knee injury in which the injury heals but the player may never be able to regain his speed/agility etc.  -- and you can't always judge its effect until you see the player in action.  Recovery from multiple concussions can be determined without seeing a player in action.  Unfortunately, repetitive concussions can make another concussion more likely, but there's no way to tell if a player who has had multiple concussions will have another one.  Mitch Morse, early in his stint with the Bills, had concussion concerns.  I don't think that he had another one for the rest of his career.

Didn't Cook's brother Dalvin,  do the exact same thing and ruin his career?  You would think little brother would learn from that and work out a good deal at a place he fits in.  Instead of a few more million, for one or two years, turn eyes on a potential HOF career.

Can they exercise 5th yr. options and would that not give an immediate pay raise to them?

I don't think Benford would get that much but that's a scary benchmark. Even if he wants to be within a few million, that's a little rich for me

I believe fifth year options are only for 1st round picks.

wrt the Benford situation.  Remember the Bills were burned by the Tre White contract at CB.  Perhaps with the concussions, they are wanting protection from that kind of injury situation again.
