Josh Allen gets record contract extension $330 million

James Cook has made $4M, and has ONE shot at a big contract to live off of the rest of his life (and any generational money to pass down). At an average of 3-4 years for extensions, he's trying to get a $45M total deal.

 

Josh earns more in 1 year than Cook will earn in his entire career.

 

It makes sense one is giving a "discount" to "only" $55M/year, while the other is working any angle he can to earn that amount spread out across his entire career(life).

 

 

And it also makes sense the team need to weigh if that is in the best interest of the team.  I don't begrudge any player from getting what they can but it takes two to tango.   Lots of guys play in the NFL and wont make what James Cook will in 2025 on his current deal.

Sure, but the point is dont use Josh's $55M/year deal to besmirch Cook for trying to get $45M TOTAL.

But they're different positions with different expectations. It's tough but RBs at Cook's level are more common and easier to find than QB's at Josh's level.

 

A team friendly deal for a QB will look very different to a team friendly deal for a RB.

Not to quibble but thread title is inaccurate as it is not a contract “extension.” He had 4 years left on his existing contract and it was not extended, it was replaced.
 it is a NEW deal for 6 years.

I think it's understandable that some might turn around and go if Josh can take a team friendly deal then why can't Cook. I understand where you're coming from, with the huge difference in sizes of contract, but sympathy is going to be limited when Cook is still earning millions of dollars - far more than nearly every fan.

 

It's just one of those things. And, to out it bluntly, Cook put it out there by his actions on social media. If you don't want callback from the public, don't make the request public in the first place.

When one is that wealthy, it really doesn’t make a noticeable impact on one’s lifestyle, it’s not like it prevents him from purchasing what ever he is interested in,

All the players taking team friendly deals says a lot about the coaching staff and the overall culture of this team. Players like it here and want to stay, even if it means a little less money.

Allen could have demanded that the Bills pay him 70 million per year, ALL of it guaranteed, starting today and what choice would they have had?

Glad you took the hits for your several posts asking all this LOL. Same questions in my head. It's weird to tear up a 6 year deal after 2 years, but I get it QB salaries exploded, so it's fair to view this as a raise. And JA could have got more. Probably immediate cap relief in there too

No. It would be based on what’s happening with other elite QBs in similar circumstance as well as staying within a given range of the top of market from a cash perspective. Too much is being made of the statistic you are referencing. It’s a nice feel good PR thing, but it’s fairly meaningless in Allen’s case. QBs like him and Mahomes are getting repeated adjustments to their deals. Ultimately it is all about cash for the player. For the team it’s about cash out and cap management - and keeping their golden goose happy.
