Groot had a better year than Sweat.  Check the metrics, Groot outperformed him in just about every single metric.

Okay, cool. I think Sweat is the better player. Paying Rousseau $20M AAV feels like a mistake. Time will tell…

Rousseau overall is a good player- But a big concern from him is- where is he during the big playoff games?

In 4 years, I honestly cant remember him making a big play or sack in a playoff game.

It says he has 3 sacks in 9 career playoff games. And 2 of them came these last playoffs. But I  can't even recall those

He is not a better player. He IS a better pass rusher.

He had a sack against Denver this year in the playoffs and he had a sack against the Ravens this year in the playoffs.

You could easily make it work. Between groot von and epenesa they were scheduled to have cap hits combined of 33 million. Griots extension probably frees up 8-9 million. If von takes a pay cut that is another 7-8 million and then trade or release epenesa gets you another 3.5. So just the savings you get for DE this year through those moves can give you almost 20 million for a guy like Hendrickson or sweat

Right, it gives you money for this season but not beyond.  Hendrickson or Sweat will want new contracts that will kick in at the same time Groot’s will.   Hendrickson won’t facilitate a trade a team that isn’t prepared to give him a new.  Myles Garrett won’t either

It’s a lot of cap space to allocate to one position.  I don’t see it happening but we will have to wait and see.

I  think I might remember the Denver one.

The ravens one- I can't even recall lol.

Overall- Good player. Just wish he had more big moments . (Even Jordan Phillips has had more big moments then him IMO)

The Bears overpaying for guys with more potential than production is kinda what they do. Their roster has been awful and they have money to burn.

If the bar is “better than the Bears,” sure it’s good business. They have certainly been a well-run and stable group for a long time.

I think you would've been surprised at how much Rousseau would've gotten in the open market.  I'm surprised tbh he re-signed here for that low of a contract relative to the importance of the position.

the cap is currently projected to go up almost another 30 million next year.

For all those saying you don’t like this and want to move on that’s not how you get better. You keep good players and add more around them.

Moving on from groot to get Hendrickson you are improving but not drastically. Keep king groot and trading for Hendrickson or signing sweat while moving on from epenesa or miller is how you actually get over the hump.

The Giants won a Super Bowl one year with a ton allocated to their defensive line

ya, im pretty much bought into the joe marino method of cap %.  samuels, knox, milano, miller all "hurt" the team because their production vs % of cap (historically, since the deals were signed) has been terrible.  diggs and tre white similar, but an order of magnitude worse.  diggs fell off, but the rest of them got hurt.  if bernard, groot, and shakir stay healthy, these will all go down as solid signings.  the above mentioned bad contracts will be replaced with cheaper rookies, or maybe one or two solid (hope superstar) free agents.

Miller was signed for a similar aav (have to look into the specific details, it might be more like 18 than 20, but let's presume 20), but 10% of cap, and he was 10 years older.  if we fudge the numbers a tiny bit, say presuming more cap growth, or presuming it is a bit lower aav than the headline, von was 50% more expensive than groot.  chandler jones singed for a similar contract to miller (guarantee money at the least, 3 years and 51mm) and turned into a pumpkin almost instantly.

the d sucked last season, so the glass half full view is we are signing these defenders to smaller contracts than they might have had post 2023

It seems to me all the recent signings (even going back to Spencer Brown, Taron Johnson and Dion last year) have been very reasonable.

Fair for both parties.

It's like these guys really do want to stay in Buffalo.

Josh is the leader of this team, and he still is OK with being the 14th (I think) highest AAV QB in the league.

That might have something to do with it.

On that note, I think Josh does an extension next spring.

This is a nice highlight film of many of the sacks, tackles for loss and QB hits he had.

Also for those that are using sack totals as their only basis of his value, you are showing yourselves to not understand the true value of a Defensive end.  Sorry, not sorry.

He was 2nd in the league in QB hits

He was 10th in the league in QB hurries

He was 10th in the league in stops.

A stop is a play that usually is a stop around the line of scrimmage.

He is 9th in the league in tackles for losses

He is 3rd in the league in causing fumbles.

Even sacks he’s 19th in the league.

Yeah, those stats in today’s market is over $20m AAV.  The Bills got a team friendly deal.

Also for those that are saying that this will limit our odds in getting more quality talent.  I’m just going to assume you don’t understand how to manipulate the cap.  The Bills recent M.O has been to add 1 voided year.

Considering that the Bills already have Rousseau for $13m for 2025, with the extension it is a 5 year $93M deal which is at $18.6M AAV

The way the deal will be structured you will see:

2025 less than 2% will be of the teams cap

2026 less than 3.5% will be of the team cap

2027 around 4% will be of the team cap.

Even 2028 can be manipulated and pushed to 2029 and the 2030  voided year.

The Eagles have 7 players with over $20M AAV extensions and another 2 more over $17M AAV

The Bills have 3 at $20m +

You can keep repeating it over and over but it won’t change the fact that you are wrong that this deal limits our ability to get more top end talent

But he had his worst game as a Bill in the biggest game of his career. It is fair to say that.
