OTC’s valuations are better, but they’re usually still off. Plus they are for the previous season so you have to extrapolate them. I think they had him at $17M+ for 2024. The problem with these simple calculations is that there is no nuance. You have to see how players play against better competition and in high leverage situations. They aren’t set up to do that. Yea the comparisons on Spotrac are somewhat useful. The actual projection numbers often way off. 1 Quote

I feel like he’s due to hit on an edge rusher with all the swings and misses he’s already taken. Edit: still could knock on Jerry’s door for Parsons to see what that would take. I would prefer them to make a difference making move in FA that can have an impact straight away …that’s unlikely to happen in the draft at Pick 30.. Maybe do both - Might have to settle on Robin in the meantime if the big boys aren’t available 9 minutes ago, JakeFrommStateFarm said: Couldn't we have gotten Hendrickson for a little bit more ? no .. because they won’t trade him to us Edited March 8 by Aussie Joe 1 Quote

Still waiting to see the final plan. If they bring in Garrett or trade up in the draft for a stud Edge guy and their plan is for Rousseau to be the complimentary guy I love it but if they are planning on him as being the anchor of the D-Line I'll be disappointed. Double the next D player with 8 (AJE). Greg led the team in QB Hits with 24. Greg led all DEs in tackles. Greg led the team in FF with 3. Von rarely pushes the QB toward Groot. My eyes has Von running past the QB more often than not. Another good or great DE will make a huge difference. I do think Beane is going in on another DE in FA. Groot also needs to move back to LDE> Rousseau is the only starting caliber DE on this team, so it makes sense he led the team in most DE categories. 2 Quote
billsfan89 Posted March 8 Posted March 8 This was the number I pegged for Groot that was fair to me. He’s not an elite DE but he’s very good and this pays his in that range. I hope he has that Ed Oliver 2023 season where maybe getting the contract eases his mind and he just can ball out. Either way 3 out of 5 drafted 2026 free agents taken care of on reasonable deals. Love to see it, take care of Benford next Quote
paulmm3 Posted March 8 Posted March 8 I like the Rousseau deal more than the Bernard deal but it doesn't make me feel great the amount of money we're handing out to re-sign members of one of the worst defenses in the league last year. 1 Quote

Logic Posted March 8 Posted March 8 (edited) Re-signing a 24 year old edge that's still ascending and was ranked 9th in HAVOC created last year to what appears to be a below market deal is good business. For those pointing out the playoff disappearance: Yep, its true. But it doesn't undo the good year he had up until that point or the fact that he's a plus starter. For those saying it takes us out of the "insert favorite trade target or free agent here" market: No it doesn't. If anything, it helps, because this deal likely lowered his cap hit for this season. For those saying "we're just keeping the status quo": First of all, that's silly. Every team re-signs its good players while ALSO still adding more. We haven't gotten to the "adding more" section of the offseason yet, so prematurely saying "status quo" is dumb and reactionary. Furthermore, "status quo" was division champion for the fifth straight year and one drive away from the Super Bowl, so the statement is dumb for TWO reasons. We'll wait to see the full contract breakdown, as always, but all indications so far is that it's a team friendly deal that will keep Groot here through his prime and won't preclude them from adding more pieces. Haters gonna hate... Edited March 8 by Logic 7 5 1 1 Quote
Doc Brown Posted March 8 Posted March 8 I'm somewhat surprised by the negativity on this one. I understood the Bernard critique. I thought $20m a year was a steal given the premium of the position. I was expecting the 4 year $100m news. 5 Quote

Offenses also knew that too. RTs walked Von up the field and QBs drifted away from Groot. I'm not saying Groot is outstanding, but he was needed to be extended and Beane needs an RDE. Quote

Tbf at $20m AAV he doesn't need to be a star DE. If he is an 8 sack a year guy every year of this deal, with maybe one double digit year thrown in and it will be worth it. Just needs to be consistently the best version of what he has been. It is high end edge #2 money. In the Greenard / Huff / Highsmith area. That isn't to say I love it as an idea - paying a #2 DE when you don't have a #1 and as I have said before I thought his AFCCG performance was arguably his worst game as a Bill. But these are high end #2 numbers which is kinda what I see Groot as. 4 3 Quote
