And what about Josh?  Remember when they extended him early and there was some backlash?  And Tre?

One huge advantage of drafting good players is the right to be able to negotiate early.  Shakir/Bernard/Groot are being extended at market rates a year early.  Hopefully Benford is next.  Would have loved for Cook to follow suit but the indications point to Cook wanting above market rates.

I don’t recall any conversations about Josh being extended or overpaid. Not single one.

Thanks. I guess Josh's Sweats 8 sacks last season mean he's a better pass rusher than Groot too.

Sweat’s production the last 4 years is almost identical to Rousseau, except he has a double digit sack season in there. Joe Marino says he’d sign Sweat as a “big ticket pass rusher,” and be done with the position, but Sweat is just another Robin. He did play monumentally better against KC than Rousseau ever has, I’ll grant you that, but we need Batman to elevate everyone on the DL.

I get it,  I just would like to see Beane have a year where he can add a difference maker or two through free agency

Connor McGovern, Mack Hollins, Ty Johnson,  Taylor rapp are/were difference makers.

you should state your post as you want to see Beane bring in the guys you think are difference makers in free agency.

He’s good but not great and because we are desperate you simply can’t let him walk.

This is a result of Beane not finding an elite guy at end. His hand was sort of forced to sign Groot.

Do I think he would be more productive with better DT play or a better opposite DE? For sure . But as it stands now that contract is on the fair to ok side . Banking on potential more than production

It won‘t

He will end up being less than 3.5% of the entire cap in 2026 and around 4% in 2027, assuming the Bills use the 1 voided year which seems to be their recent M.O

I'm not exactly sure what the contract structure is now besides the guaranteed money, so I will take your word for that. But Void years still count against the credit card in the long term- As you got the pay the bill eventually

Kind of crazy what an 8 sack per year guy can make in today's league.

It ain’t all about sacks, which are nice but pressures result in more turnovers and he’s among the better DEs in the league when it comes to setting an edge and run defending.

That's kinda my point that some scream for us to sign Sweat or add X in free agency cuz they so much better than what we already have etc but likely cost a helluva lot more in terms of cap space.

Um Josh was second team

AP and top 2 in MVP voting when he got extended.

there was virtually no backlash to his extension.

Comparing that circumstance to Greggs 25 sacks in 4 seasons is apples to orangutans.

So if the Bengals won’t trade Trey H to us , and the Browns dig in on keeping Garrett ..who is the next Batman ?

Why can’t they? They want to improve …not just run it back

Push the money down the track like the Eagles do and make the most of Josh Allen’s window that’s left …

That is to be determined.  As a fan, I hope you are correct.  Been a while since they acquired a real top shelf player.

My maximum for DE2 was $19M/yr, but I can’t hate this at $20M. I was absolutely against the Spotrac projections.

Spotrac is really bad at projections. I wouldn’t use them for anyone. OTC’s valuations are better, but they’re usually still off. Plus they are for the previous season so you have to extrapolate them. I think they had him at $17M+ for 2024. The problem with these simple calculations is that there is no nuance. You have to see how players play against better competition and in high leverage situations. They aren’t set up to do that.

This is a steal even if his current production holds. AND I still don't think he's hit his ceiling.

Agree. Stop accommodating the geriatric Miller and let Groot rush from the right side, ideally opposite a quality player on the left side, and you'll see results. It really is time to cut Miller. He gave us half a season for $20 million, and is an expensive waste of a roster spot. Sign Josh Sweat or trade for Hendrickson, and draft a DE with one of the two second-round picks to join Javon Solomon. Together with a big, active DT and Oliver, that would be a real line.

The Josh Sweat anticipated deal will be interesting to see.  Even though his advanced metrics aren’t as good as Rousseau’s, he’s the closest comp that is expected to sign this year.

His deal won’t be an extension so the deal will begin immediately whereas Rousseau’s extension doesn’t begin until 2026.  That dilutes the value a little bit relative to Rousseau’s.

The better way to compare what Josh Sweat will end up getting vs what Rousseau receives will be including the 2025 $13m existing contract for Rousseau which makes it a 5 year $93m $18.6m AAV

Im guessing Sweat will get somewhere around that amount

Agreed.

I spent two years giving Spencer Brown a ration of crap for his footwork and now he's probably my 2nd favorite player on this team.

Glad you came around! That also shows a humility that you rarely see here with all the dug-in takes

Maybe you’ve forgotten that he only played one full season of college football and is 24 years old. He’s already an elite run defender, he’s a decent pass rusher, and he has had elite moments. Not to mention, he has never had strong talent around him other than maybe Ed Oliver and 0.5 seasons of an older Von Miller.

Acting like this caps our team in some way is just a loser mentality. You have no idea what he’s capable of in the future and he has shown plenty of signs of big potential.

Maybe you don’t understand who Rousseau is and what his limitations are. He’s a useful player. But what he’s good at isn’t what’s most important and most valued for Edge players. He’s a good complimentary piece, but he’s never going to be a difference maker. That’s okay, but you have to be careful how much cash and cap space gets tied up in players like that.

It’s not a loser mentality to be aware that teams have limited cash and cap space. Yes, this extension will open up cap space this season, but overall it will take up significant space  Also there is a cash budget it will eat up a chunk of. Not acknowledging or understanding that is pretty juvenile.

Good question. Beane has to find him in the draft. I feel like he’s due to hit on an edge rusher with all the swings and misses he’s already taken.

Edit: still could knock on Jerry’s door for Parsons to see what that would take.

Good thing we didn’t tie up a bunch of money in another good but not great player like Ed Oliver who isn’t even good enough to help Rousseau’s production.

I assure you there was plenty of it because even I was not confident in the value of the contract but I defended it because of the nature of the league.
