How so?  Let’s say that you sign Trey Hendrickson.   He’s likely going to want a new 3-4 year deal before being traded.  If you’re Buffalo will you allocate $40M+ on your two DE’s?   Probably not.

Why can’t they? They want to improve …not just run it back …

Push the money down the track like the Eagles do and make the most of Josh Allen’s window that’s left …

The beauty is that he is ascending, that’s not in dispute.  I would assume he hasn’t hit his ceiling yet unless last year was the peak and I don’t see any evidence to suggest that.

If the Bills want to make this extension look good they need to add a legit pass rusher across from him. That will go a long way in telling us if Rousseau's mediocre sack production is because of his own deficiencies or because the  players around him haven't been good enough to let his talent shine.

I think there's a bit too much emphasis being placed on Rousseau's youth and supposed ceiling. He just finished his 4th year. You don't see a lot of players take off in their 5th year and beyond. The conversation reminds me of Tremaine Edmunds, not that I'm saying this contract is anything close to the horrible contract Chicago gave him, it just gives me the same feeling.

I can’t see them doing that…but we’ll see

Here's my question for you and anyone else who loves this extension - if Rousseau remains exactly the player he has been, do you think he is worth this money? For me the answer is a hard no. I would guess the Bills feel similarly. They are betting that he is going to improve. For all the advanced stats that rank him higher than his production would indicate, he has maxed out at 8 sacks. Even with the exploding salary cap I don't believe 8 sack players are worth $20M AAV.

Running back the 2024 roster is so on-brand it hurts.

jump balls to Mack Hollins in 2025. Josh will probably win MVP again.

He was top ten in pressures last year with less snaps than many of his peers.  I don't see an overpay here.  Rousseau has justified his draft position and of course they're betting on continued improvement, that would be the case for any second contract.  I don't think they view Oliver as an overpay either (he was better in 2023 than 2024, for sure).

Garrett had 9 games without a sack last season.

You don't get it. When Groot has a game with three sacks, those don't count.

Hopefully. So far the examples we have are Knox who turned out to be a massive overpay, Oliver who I would say we about broke even on and are still hoping for more, and Brown who looks like a great bargain. So we are 1 for 3 in this sort of move ending up as you say.

And what about Josh?  Remember when they extended him early and there was some backlash?  And Tre?

One huge advantage of drafting good players is the right to be able to negotiate early.  Shakir/Bernard/Groot are being extended at market rates a year early.  Hopefully Benford is next.  Would have loved for Cook to follow suit but the indications point to Cook wanting above market rates.

Thanks. I guess Josh's Sweats 8 sacks last season mean he's a better pass rusher than Groot too.

They’ll still add at EGDE I just don’t think it will be an impact player like we all had been hoping for.

You could easily make it work. Between groot von and epenesa they were scheduled to have cap hits combined of 33 million. Griots extension probably frees up 8-9 million. If von takes a pay cut that is another 7-8 million and then trade or release epenesa gets you another 3.5. So just the savings you get for DE this year through those moves can give you almost 20 million for a guy like Hendrickson or sweat

For certain, everyone who plays for another team is better, unless it's convenient for them not to be. We like to be objective here.

Groot had more sacks in the 2024 post season than Micah parsons and Myles Garret have in their career.

Plus he is younger.

so there.

Can’t wait to see him and Oliver with a new stud or studs playing alongside them.

Maybe by last years cap. It’s a new day and next year will be even better.

I get it,  I just would like to see Beane have a year where he can add a difference maker or two through free agency

Allen had just had an MVP level year when we extended him, and he's a QB. White was elite almost from day one. Those are completely different conversations.

The players we just gave big extensions to are good not great players at slot WR, LB, and run stopping EDGE. In a vacuum that does not demonstrate good value. The best positive example you can point to is Spencer Brown who was also a good not great player at a less premium position. Beane was right about him, he ascended further and looks like a steal. I think Beane needs to be right about 2 out of 3 of these recent signings. If we're paying them for what they've done then collectively it is a massive overpay.

Groot needs a partner on the other side.  Von is not it.

Greg led the team in TFLs with 16.  Double the next D player with 8 (AJE).

Greg led the team in QB Hits with 24.

Greg led all DEs in tackles.

Greg led the team in FF with 3.

Von rarely pushes the QB toward Groot.  My eyes has Von running past the QB more often than not.

Another good or great DE will make a huge difference.

I do think Beane is going in on another DE in FA.

Groot also needs to move back to LDE>

Dont be surprised if he is the other move they make

Dayo Odeyingbo feels more of a guy we'd add as brings height and inside/outside flexibility. Toss in he might be cheaper than Sweat. Yet think have to wait for Von to be gone first.

Extensions for Benfird, Allen, and Cook should've been prioritized before Rousseau, but I think his age has a lot to do with it. If they feel he is entering his prime, it makes sense to lock him up long term.

He's not a consistent pass rusher yet, that must be said.
