how does this prevent us from getting game changers? It freed up a chunk of space

Because of the cap space it will take up in 2026 and beyond.

This extension I at least understand, unlike Bernard where I was confused about the rush to get it done. Rousseau at his best shuts down his entire side of the field in the run game. If they can get a legit pass rusher across from him he could be a piece in a very good DL. I just don't like that we are now paying a lot of pieces like they're studs.

Obviously we need to see what Beane is able to do when FA starts to really judge these moves. Right now I get the sense they are playing it very safe, aggressively maintaining the status quo. I hope they have left themselves enough resources to add at least one top tier talent because that's what we've been missing.

Agreed.

I spent two years giving Spencer Brown a ration of crap for his footwork and now he's probably my 2nd favorite player on this team.

He is the perfect example.  I want to see what Groot can do with this new DL guru and some other help on the DL.  The kid is only 24 as well.

All in all, looking at the realities of the situation this is a good deal. It's NOT an overpay in that sense. He is a good edge run defender and he is a " good" pass rusher. The question is, can he make that jump to be an impact rusher? You watch him, and game in and game out he gets THISCLOSE to the QB but can't seem to finish the deal. Can he close that gap?? That's the question going forward that will determine if this contract was good in the long run.

I think he can close that gap with better running mates on the DL and a better mix of schemes. It appears we are gonna play more man coverage than previously, so perhaps the scheme question is in the cards as I think more man means more blitzes. We shall see.

the cap is projected to keep rising at a very high rate + there is always the option of void years in big contracts like if we were to acquire an elite Edge

I thought Cook had back spasms after taking a shot when he stretched over the line on 4th n goal?

That is entirely possible.

I've just never heard anybody confirm that was why they went away from him.

thanks for the info. I think I saw previously that this makes him the 8th highest paid DE. Hendrickson and sweats deals will likely be more this offseason so that puts him at 10th right in line with where his stats are.

what people are not realizing is the cap has gone up consistently and will continue to do so. In 3 years when this extension will really kick in the cap will be 75 to 100 million more.

Tre Hendrickson signed a 4 year deal in 2020 worth 60 million. When he signed that deal he had 20 sacks in is 4 year nfl career.

2020 salary cap 198 million

2025 salary cap- 279 million

This deal for groot is very similar at year 80 million. Yes 20 million more but the cap went up 81 million and will continue to. Groot has had 25 sacks in 4 years

Keep in mind, that’s 8th in the league of existing contracts in place.  Many of those deals were from 1-3 seasons ago.  If all players were up for a contact extension, at this contract he signed there most likely would have been 15 Edge defenders who would have gotten higher payouts.

If/should we land a big ticket DE FA, GROOT will immediately be even better on the field. I sense a master plan unfolding.

Among all EDGE defenders in the league last year Groot finished:

T-9th in pressures
T-6th in QB hits

T-9th in TFL

T-4th in forced fumbles

There’s a lot more to it than just sacks.

Great post.  IMO he has an elite ceiling and seems to be improving every year

he did have 2 sacks in the playoffs as well.  Go get an impactful Edge opposite him, upgrade the interior and his sack numbers could double

Maybe by last years cap. It’s a new day and next year will be even better.

Cap is $279M this year and Spotrac has next year's cap estimated at $307M.  $28M increase.

I wasn’t crazy to see this deal because it likely means Buffalo isn’t coming away with a Myles Garrett type player.   I like Rosseau, I just don’t think he’s ever going to be in the top  tier of difference makers at DE.

Beane is clearly banking on potential with this signing and reminds me a lot Ed Oliver a few years back.

In 2 years all these deals over the last few days are going to seem like huge bargains.

Wrong this deal actually allows some space to clear up to actually go after on Miles Garrett type player.

No. It does not mean that at all.

in fact it increases the chances of a big move

Yes, this is how I'm reading the tea leaves too.  Not loving it if that's the case.

I’m increasingly thinking Garrett is a pipe dream the way Cleveland is handling this.

I think Hendrickson is a very distinct possibility and I’m starting to be more open to simply signing Josh Sweat if a trade isn’t going to be possible.
