Greg Rousseau Extended (4 years / 80M / 54M Guaranteed)

All in all, looking at the realities of the situation this is a good deal. It's NOT an overpay in that sense. He is a good edge run defender and he is a " good" pass rusher. The question is, can he make that jump to be an impact rusher? You watch him, and game in and game out he gets THISCLOSE to the QB but can't seem to finish the deal. Can he close that gap?? That's the question going forward that will determine if this contract was good in the long run.

I spent two years giving Spencer Brown a ration of crap for his footwork and now he's probably my 2nd favorite player on this team.

If the plan is to address the DL through the Draft by signing a mercenary EDGE and drafting a DT early, I can see that being underwhelming. 
 

If the idea is pay Rousseau and then make a big trade or sign Sweat AND use an early pick on the DL… I see the vision. 
 

I think Beane realizes that a talented, big/physical 1T needs to be next to Ed Oliver.    And I think Beane realizes a legitimate 10+ sack guy needs to be opposite Rousseau. 
 

That can be accomplished via trade, signing a guy like Sweat and through the Draft, but we very clearly still need 2-3 new pieces on the DL. 

If Beane plays his cards right, it’s entirely possible to beef up the DL in one offseason. We saw him do it on the other side last year. 
 

I would love one of the big 3 pass rushers Garrett/Hendrickson/Crosby, but a Sweat/Rousseau tandem w/ AJE rotating in is not too shabby. I think Beane goes DT in the first round and possibly trading up if a top 20 prospect ends up falling.

seems like groot was killing it the first year that von was here and healhty untill he got injured.

 

plus it seems like  a lot of times if the Bills are determined to get to the qb they do it..just more times than 

not they play a passive scheme.

I hear ya, but I think they will.   The way he played last year was at near elite level.  Ripping off long TD’s, phenomenal around the end zone, showed that he could run in between the tackles, good receiver.

 

Bottom line he is a play maker and arguably the best offensive skill position player on the team.   I don’t think he will walk unless his demands are unreasonable and last I saw his asking price was $15m AAV which isn’t too far off his correct value

I can see a lot of people getting hung up on the $80 million dollar number, but you can't think about it this way.  The real number is $54 million.  And for 4 years, that's not all that bad.  If he plays well, he is a great candidate to restructure on a regular basis.  If he doesn't play well and isn't deserving of the contract, it's not going to be an anchor....

I'm torn on this one.

His burst is absolutely elite, his vision is outstanding and he's worked hard to become a much tougher tackle.

But if the Bills have so little faith in him that they ignore him and sub him out for the biggest drive of the year, I have to wonder how much they really value him.

Maybe you’ve forgotten that he only played one full season of college football and is 24 years old. He’s already an elite run defender, he’s a decent pass rusher, and he has had elite moments. Not to mention, he has never had strong talent around him other than maybe Ed Oliver and 0.5 seasons of an older Von Miller.

 

Acting like this caps our team in some way is just a loser mentality. You have no idea what he’s capable of in the future and he has shown plenty of signs of big potential.

And less than 4% in 2027

 

Not to mention close to $10M in cap savings for 2025 providing lots of flexibility to go after more FA and trade targets!

 

 

thanks for the info. I think I saw previously that this makes him the 8th highest paid DE. Hendrickson and sweats deals will likely be more this offseason so that puts him at 10th right in line with where his stats are. 
 

what people are not realizing is the cap has gone up consistently and will continue to do so. In 3 years when this extension will really kick in the cap will be 75 to 100 million more. 

Tre Hendrickson signed a 4 year deal in 2020 worth 60 million. When he signed that deal he had 20 sacks in is 4 year nfl career.

 

2020 salary cap 198 million

 

2025 salary cap- 279 million

 

This deal for groot is very similar at 4 year 80 million. Yes 20 million more but the cap went up 81 million and will continue to. Groot has had 25 sacks in 4 years
