I like the signing, and the idea of getting bigger up front to protect Bernard…

However, I am concerned that Oliver will always be a liability when trying to implement this plan…just sayin…

25 mil guaranteed for a very good (and sometimes great) starting LB is a fantastic thing. So many people not liking this is confounding. Who else of the same caliber could you get at that price for 4 years?

hint: nobody.

Hont, the same place they got him for considerably less than what he’s now being paid.  He’s another OK player taking up valuable cap space.  If he had shown any indication he could be the 2023 version of himself, it’s a great deal, as of right now it looks like a signature run it back and hope for a different result move.

I hope so. The guaranteed money is low enough that it's possible. That would be the one saving grace. That AAV is really shockingly high though. I can't imagine any other team out there giving him that kind of value. It's the opposite of a hometown discount.

LOL, why don’t you go and read or listen to guys who actually evaluate film and performance?  “Shockingly high” is a hilarious statement.

How can you say no one in the FO cares when Beane said he would prefer not to negotiate on social media?

And Beane also said something to the effect of the $15M was nowhere near what he had in mind.  So if Beane made his offer and we haven't heard anything and there is not a lot of back and forth - those are all indications of potential problems.

When asked directly about it, Beane answered, completely unsurprisingly, that he would prefer not to. Like anhyone would say. But that doesnt mean it actually affects anything at all. He just answered the question.

Even behind closed doors he isnt saying "Well we offered him $14M/yr but now that he posted 3 emojis call his agent and tell him we're changing it to $12M/yr!"

And Beane saying $15M was nowhere near what he had in mind is BEANE negotiating through the media. So both sides are "guilty". But it doesnt really matter.

Any difficulty in getting a deal done and being far apart in numbers would exist whether Jimbo posts on social media or not.

I didn’t see the needle move.

If he didn't return the needle would have moved.

Every offseason I say (and no one heeds it): never believe the first contract numbers you hear. They are always reported by the player's agent and made to sound as favorable as possible. Always, always, ALWAYS wait until the contract details come out, because they typically paint a vastly different picture than what is initially reported.

In this case, $25 million guaranteed tells us more than "four years, $50 million". Even so, as for the contract numbers themselves, I'm waiting until they're all out in detail before I comment. On its face, it doesn't seem to be a bank-breaking deal, but more info is needed.

As for the player: this reminds me of Spencer Brown. Paying an ascending player BEFORE he fully breaks out and becomes one of the best at his position in the league. They clearly like Bernard a lot and have entrusted him to be the leader of this defense. They've seen the flashes of playmaking ability and the leadership and smarts that he provides. The best possible thing they can do now is ensure that they beef up the D-line and allow Bernard (and Milano and Williams) to roam free without getting engulfed by guards.

Locking up the young leader of your defense is a GOOD thing. Doing so on a reasonable contract is even better, and we'll know soon whether that was the case. So far, though, it looks like it was.

Interesting. Conveniently people omit who they would rather have, or the chances of landing someone of the same caliber via draft and then develop them. It’s incredibly inconvenient to make an argument you can’t support with facts and real analysis.

how would you replace him? With so many other needs, would it be smart to let him walk?

im quite sure there will be no concrete answers here, but please give it a shot.

5th highest paid ILB in the league. Not an outrageous deal but also not team friendly. And there are definite health concerns.

I would have waited and reevaluated after next season. Hopefully he stays healthy and gets back to 2023 form.

He's kind of small

My wife assures me that it's not the size that matters, but the way you use it.

Then again, she does seem to have a lot of gentleman callers...

If he can consistently be more of the player he was in 2023 then it's a tremendous deal.

Agree. If 2023 TB this is his market rate, maybe even a little below. At 2024 level TB I think this is an overpay. Not a massive one but an overpay all the same. He'd have been 4th on my list of 4 from that 2022 class to get done.

These kinds of moves are why they're constantly against the cap and never seem to have room to add a true receiving option.

Points to another off-season of the status quo, but we'll see.

Ok but if you could just maybe pick a gentler class. She always seems so worn out when you drop her off.
