The overall number of $50 million is a bit jarring for the player we have seen him be so far, especially with how often he is banged up.  But the only number that really matters is the guaranteed money and that is definitely a lot more palatable.  It will be interesting to see how this contract is structured.  How easy is it for the incentives to be reached, etc.  He's a good player that can be great at times.  He relies a lot on his preparation and film study and gambles at times.  Sometimes it pays off huge and sometimes he can be made to look like a fool when teams break tendencies.

He's a good player that seems to be respected in the room for his work ethic.  Obviously, if we can revamp the line in front of him and help to keep him clean, he will benefit greatly from that.  It's a fine signing that seems to be fair for both sides, but it definitely isn't a "hometown discount" or team friendly deal.

Yeah, I think that could be a smart play by Beane. And like I said I do like the player. I was one of the few defending him during his redshirt year as I thought he was pretty good in spot duty. I like the idea of keeping our own, I just would have liked to see a little bit more from Bernard before committing. I don't really care about his size and stuff. This braintrust clearly likes what they see so I think it's fair to try to get this done early.

I understand where some people are coming from. There are definitely issues on the defense, but Bernard is generally not the problem. He does have a habit of getting lost in the crowd of bodies once in a while, but I think getting bigger at defensive tackle will offset that issue. He and Milano are so similar in the way they play although I think Milano is better against the run. It helps so much against the pass when you have athletic LBs with superior range, but you sacrifice getting pushed around. The league (and Bills especially) seems to be trending more towards a more physical running style again so we’ll see if Bernard and McDermott can adapt. As I said on an earlier post, they played the Ravens as good as any team has so it gives me hope. Just gotta find a Pat Williams clone.

Can someone give me an update on our cap room? Or maybe create a thread that gives updates on our cap room since it seems to change day to day with re-signings and releases.

The cap is a myth.

(this saying always fires up some folks so lets see how it goes)

Another way of looking at it

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised that some of this $53m isn’t base or automatic bonuses but performance related.

I flat out disagree, Bernard is a playmaking lb, a leader , he is great in this system.  He hasn't missed that many games where I'm concerned personally and is phenomenal in this system, he rarely gets fooled and rarely takes the wrong lanes, has good coverage ability

I'd rather have Bernard at 4 year $50m than Edmunds at 4 year $72m.  Especially given the contracts will be three years apart since Bernard extension won't kick in until 2026.

I was looking at our roster and cap about an hour ago and realized that I wouldn't be shocked if Milano was surprising post June 1 cut.

I'd say chances are little bit higher now.

As for Bernard, I like that we are keeping our own, and he was very good most of the time. I am not sure this is the right time and right price, but I'll trust Beane on this one. I hope that we will see actual deal sooner than in Shakir's case :)

How the heck do you use Spotrac? LOL  I went to look at Milano after seeing this.  It said possible out is 2026 at $11m dead cap, but it didn't say how much thatd save us.  I too feel this is creeping in.  Love the player, hate the injuries.  Cant afford to pay two guys the way they do, and have them both getting banged up.... they're NFL LB's, theyre gunna take a beating, games happen here and there, but Milano has gone from 2-3 games a year to starting or finishing the year on IR.... we can't allocate those resources to him anymore.  Maybe a reworked deal could be had that helps us out?  He seems reasonable

Beane will cover him up with a monster 1 tech this spring, prob both via draft and FA

If thats the defensive tweak McBabich make this offseason ? Keep the LBs clean and pressure up the middle is the name of the Game ?

I am all for it. And heck yes. Get me two. One that starts day one.

This^^^ The Bills season next year will be made or broken by how well the Bills D line can be upgraded.

We too are on the same page. Inside and edge.

Rasul Douglas's replacement is critical as well , I hope you agree

If that is a real question............

Under the "Cap Breakdown" tab in the player's page go all the way over to the right and click on the red scissors for 2025 year.

A pop-up comes up with all the trade and release details.

I just don't see why this was a priority offseason event.  He was under contract for next year.  He's more valuable in our system than anyone else's - I am not too worried about a bidding war breaking out after next season.  And if it did?  That money would be better used on a premium position.

I see your point, but all contracts are multi year, and you need to plan for that, and do this diving and others help how they can structure future contract transactions.

I don’t like locking up another B player in a critical position. MLB can be a monster in this system. He’s good, the value is good, but this is now the ceiling at MLB and I think B players being the ceiling are the heart of this teams issues.

I’ve noticed Beane does a lot of his extensions early basing them more on potential so he ends up getting them cheaper than if he had waited.

He was out for 4 games.

and the KC playoff game the year before.

he just didn't look as good this year and the Bills D regressed. He's a C though and Bills seem to think he's a centerpiece, but he's got to be one of the smallest MLBs in the NFL

And he could blow out his knee next year or miss several games. Sometimes that extra year of information is worth waiting for. This is the pitfall of the extend early to save mantra we live and die by.

I don’t exactly love this decision…. But I can see why they did it …

He is the leader on the D and a big  piece of how that side of the ball ticks … you can have your own opinions on how that’s been working out for them … but it seems to be a lot better when he is in the line up…

On the other side of the coin  … his play last year seemed a surprising step back , and he has had injuries the last two years …a lot is expected on the field from that small frame

Im hoping the final numbers are closer to $10m a year than  $12.5, but even more importantly is his availability over the next three years when they are in the meat of whatever is left of JA’s window.. Upgrade the D line and Secondary now please Beane

Look in the column to the left for "Cap Hit" then subtract "Dead Money" to determine what we would save.

For Milano in 2026, $16.1M Cap Hit and $11M Dead Money.

If we keep him, he costs us $16.1M. If we cut him, he costs us $11M in dead money. So we save $5.1M if we cut him.
