I would send a 6th for Sam Howell. I just can't help but feel he could have a better than Darnold year in a new place....or give us a cheaper, better backup option.

If Pete Caroll had any brains , he would make him a Raider.

If Josh goes down, the Bills are f-ed no matter who the back up is.

King Ghidorah can be the backup and it still wouldn’t matter, the Bills are screwed if Josh goes down.

Good analogy.

If Josh gets hurt the season is over. Doesn’t matter who the backup is in my opinion. You are better off bottoming out and getting a top 5 pick to play with a returning Josh.

What if he’s only out for 3 or 4 games?

Seems like the consensus is Mitch can win you a couple of games. I’d agree with that. I just don’t think you have the luxury of paying a premium backup 10 million dollars to play those 4 games, when it’s very unlikely he plays at all.

When you look at all the highly paid QBs around the league, they all have terrible journeymen or league minimum backups. I just don’t think you can devote cap to a backup when you are paying a premium starter.

I would never wish injury on Allen. But one thing it would do is help some McBeane fanboys understand how badly they have managed/coached this roster after drafting possibly the most naturally gifted QB to ever play the game.

Most injuries aren’t season ending. Look at it through the lens of a month. If he went out for 4 weeks, you’d probably have to be 2-2 to still have a shot at the division. That’s how they should view it. If he’s back healthy by the playoffs, and you win the division, you’re in the same spot that you’ve been in for 5 years entering the postseason.

I think everyone's greatest fear every snap of every game is what happens if something happens to #17!

Mitch isn't the answer!  He certainly has the potential to be the guy for a series or two, and maybe for a game or two, even though I think that's highly unlikely!

My confidence level in Trubisky on a scale of 1-10 is somewhere in the range between 1 and 1.5.  Maybe if we had an absolute stable of studs at WR & TE to go along with Cook, I could entrust Mitch for a game or two, but even then, against any solid competition, I just have serious doubts. He showed zero capabilities in Pittsburgh during his short stint there.

Are there any FA QB's out there that will help ease the anxiety of this organization?

As it stands right now, If Josh Allen goes down all the Myles Garretts and Joey Bosa's of the world aren't going to help.

Mitch. Mitch. Mitch.  Best choice, probably by a long shot.

First, the point everyone makes:  If Josh goes down for an extended period, you can probably kiss the season goodbye.  One exception would be a 6-week injury early in the season.  Scratch out a couple of wins without, then make a late-season run when he returns.

So, the only point worth talking about is what if the Bills lose Josh for a couple of games?  Then I think Mitch is the answer.  He has starter talent, or he wouldn't have been drafted where he was.  The style of his game is similar to Josh's.  He can't compare, but he's big, he'll run, he has a big arm.  He's a third-rate Josh.  The Bills can insert him in the lineup without having to adjust the offense significantly.

He's smart, he's dedicated.  I think he and Josh get along well.

Mitch is about as good as the Bills can hope to get. Here's the list of quarterback passing yards last season, starting at #32 on the list.  I don't think I'd take any of them over Mitch as the Bills backup.

I don't think it matters. If Josh is out then this team has little to no chance at being successful.

The exact reasoning for Josh winning the MVP!

This team is probably not even close to .500 without him.

I always view backup QB as, “if Josh went out for a month, what would the record be?” As a rule, I think 2-2 needs to be the answer. If Mitch can do that, good by me. Kyle Allen wasn’t hat guy IMO.

and in our division, the best part of that is .500 would’ve taken the crown last year. We won’t always win by 5 games by going 3-1 every month but there’s a reality that if we lose Josh for 4-6 weeks we probably aren’t chasing the 1 seed and are resigned to winning a very winnable division and letting the rest shake out in the playoffs with Josh back

the difference between the 2 seed and a barely .500 4 seed is one game home vs away.

load up a playoff roster and have a marginally passable backup that won’t go 0-6 and miss completely.

I like Riley Leonard or Will Howard in RD4. It would be nice to have a legitimate option behind Josh that we can develop at a cost controlled price. Who knows? Maybe we strike gold and trade him for picks later down the road.

I like the Riley Leonard idea, assuming Beane thinks he has higher upside than any of the backups we already have

I must have missed it, when did Trubisky take any meaningful stats for the Bills that you were able to determine this?

Minshew was mentioned as an improvement, funny when you look at their career stats, just about every one Trubisky is better than Minshew.  The only one stat Minshew was slightly better at was int % and it was 2.5 vs 2.0.  Everything else Trubisky was better for their careers.

You even say Trubisky may be able to win a game or two.  Why would any QB who views themselves better than being able to win a game or two want to even come to Buffalo when you know you have no chance of ever playing unless Allen gets hurt or its a blowout.  You'd go to NY or Cleveland where you know the starting QB is on shaky ground and could easily get benched at some point and you're now the starter.  Even if Allen had a horrendous game and Bills are getting blown out and was sat down by mid way through the 3rd quarter, the back up could come in and throw 5 TD' and lead the Bills to victory, but the next week Allen is starting if healthy.

This is a 1st world country problem you're bringing up and don't even know that it's a problem or that there's a better reasonable solution out there.
