Poll: Would you rather have 1000yds & 10TDs or 13 Sacks & 10 TFLs?

In light of the ongoing debate over which big name player we might trade for(Myles Garrett or DK Metcalf) perhaps a more objective way of looking at it might be to evaluate which overall stat lines would equate to more wins so I present this poll with players names removed.

I took the 13 Sack line. And it's simply because if you have a guy that can hit that sack number, it doesn't necessarily equate to taking plays away from other guys. It may even boost other player numbers. Whereas on offense, you're likely taking away targets from other guys. Not a bad thing, but I think there's a bit of a ceiling on offense. I would really love to see a dominate defense at times.

Seems intuitive that TDs would be more correlated with winning.  Should note that in 2020 and 2024 (our two best Josh seasons) we had 56 and 62 TDs and only 38 and 39 sacks.  2021, 2022, 2023 all had more sacks and less TDs.  So more TDs all day please.

Someone on our team will already account for the 1000 yards and 10 TD's...we have the highest scoring offense in the NFL the past 5 years, 16th most PPG in NFL history in 2024.  But no one on our team is getting us those sacks and TFL's.  We need that more than anything.

4 highest scoring teams in NFL history did not win the SB. 1 and 2 got shut down, even one blown out, in the SB by conservative offenses with strong defenses.  3 and 4 didn't even reach the SB.  Only 3 teams in the top 10 scoring won a SB.  Mahomes best season as a QB and offense they didn't even reach the SB.  Yet the went to 3 straight with a medicore offense and won 2.  

 

So history and statistics say otherwise that more scoring is the easier path over improving the defense.

I want a defense that holds the other team at the right times. Sacks aren’t everything. Defensive stops when needed are.

 

I want an offense that has a great QB.  Dangerous runner. WR’s who challenge at short yardage, slot and boundary.

Interesting point that I haven't considered.

Leonard Floyd might have been the best free agent signing Brandon Beane has made with Buffalo.  I would happily take his production again for $9 million a year.

as mentioned in another thread, w shakir's contract and paying cook what he wants we'd be at sub 10% now (and less in 2 years) for our two best skill players.  a long threat wr is somewhat necessary for us to get over the next hump, but it can be one of like 30 guys who can do it decently.  there arent' many guys who can fill our pass rush and up front physical needs.

The beauty of the poll is that the Bills have a massive need for both. There are guys that can accomplish that out there. If you added, “1200 yard rusher with 15TDs” it wouldn’t get any votes. They pretty much have that. This team, as good as it is, has some massive holes. If you add either of those, it’s a giant step towards a Super Bowl.

13 sack guy is a lot harder to find than a 1000 yard receiver, especially when you have an MVP at QB.

Interestingly you said strong defenses and not SACKS.  Those defenses were very good scoring defenses.  I would agree scoring defense > scoring offense, but that was not the premise of the poll.  The yards are hardly even part of the equation to me, and i consider sacks to be closer to yards than they are to scoring.

Well my main point was that those 10 TD's for example are going to be scored by this offense no matter what.  Doesn't mattter if its a top 5 WR getting them or if its spread around other guys, or its Allen or Cook running them in, etc.  We score those TD's already, you are more just changing whose stat sheet records them, not generating an additional 10 TD's we were not previously already scoring.  

 

But on defense, adding more negative plays such as sacks, TFL's and also pressures (which wasn't initially included but comes with sacks and TFL's increasing) will reduce opponents scoring, increase the effectiveness of the rest of the defense as QB's tend to make more mistakes under more pressure or the threat of pressure.  And by default that also gives our offense more scoring opportunities by getting off the filed on 3rd down more times rather than allowing extended drives, especially given our defense was amongst the bottom of the league in 3rd conversions and first downs allowed.

 

So the defensive guy in this scenario does more for this team...both defensively and offensively by giving the offense more TOP through getting off the field more, and with more TOP they have more opportunities to score.  

 

And IMHO the debate really isn't even close in this case as to which player benefits the teams overall success more.

We need a freaking pass rusher that actually has a repitore and not just engage with the lineman then stay stagnant. Von still has a nice spin move here and there but..I saw a Charles Davis mock draft and he had us taking some edge rusher from Boston college. I just saw some of his highlights but he seems like that kinda guy that can really get after it with a variety of ways. Donavon ezuerakiu?

A lot of receivers can get 1k yards and 10 TDs if Josh throws them the ball. Josh can't sack opposing QBs. Get the pass rusher.
