KC has done this with they secondary and haven't missed a beat.

Let's see if they can do the same on the OL.   It's a different beast, and they're already weak on that unit to begin with.

This year is their largest roster turnover since their Dynasty has started.

Losing Thuney

Losing Reid

Losing several D-line rotational players

Losing 2-3 WRs (D-Hop, Hollywood)

Losing Bolton most likely

I'll be interested to see how they are going to navigate this.

He was an expensive Guard, and they already have 2 studs on that OL.  So it's like others said, asset allocation.  Likely they will draft OL at 31 or 2nd, and grab a FA.  I don't think this hurts them as much as we all hope it does.  That money will go to extending Bolton and others (H. Brown).

I think it makes sense for the Chiefs. Thuney is still a significant loss, make no mistake, but if they are rebuilding that offensive line building it around Creed and Trey makes sense. Paying 4/5 spots on your Oline only to put trash out there at left tackle is a bad strategy.

Until you see that money going to Miles Garrett, Devante Adams or Tee Higgins.

Not sure I see them giving up the draft assets for a big trade like Garrett when they need multiple pieces on their OL at a cost control.

I (think) this is more of a move to lock up their own pieces that are coming due.

And redirect money from guard to tackle possibly? Their need at left tackle is desperate. It is bigger than any single positional need the Bills have on their roster.

It makes sense for all sides. The Bears simply have to get better there to give Caleb a chance. The Chiefs have to prioritize Smith and Humphrey. It’s about asset allocation. Now they can reallocate that $ elsewhere. They have needs.

Thuney for a 4th in next years draft is good time to bring up that Beane traded Cody Ford for a 5th.

All Pro guard in the sunset of his career due for one last payday being traded from a cap strapped team for cap space… 2nd rd bust in the prime of his career on his rookie contract traded for peanuts because he sucks… 🤔… this is not the flex you think it is.

So KC will have to improve LG and RT this offseason?

They might move their 2nd Rounder last year who busted at LT last season to LG. So expect the Chiefs to draft a LT prospect again this season.

Are they freeing up cap space to enter the Garrett sweepstakes (if they happen)?

I doubt it they were over the cap prior to the trade, it likely helps offset franchising Smith.

you sort of wonder if the cold business moves end up taking a toll on the culture of that organization. They basically jettison a lot of key stars in their primes, with no real warning. Tyreek, Snead, now Thuney.

Thuney seems especially cold, since they basically asked him to play way out of position to keep that team afloat down the stretch.

Let Ward walk as well.

Yet they keep playing in Super Bowl after Super Bowl.

What would the Chiefs do with Benford, Bernard and Cook?  Would they extend all of them like we likely will?  Probably not.

Good move for Bears, and the right move for KC.  They couldn't keep Thuney/Smith/Humphrey all at once given their contract situation.  Taylor will be gone after next year, so I'll be interested if they spend anything substantial for Thuney's replacement this year, or wait until next year (maybe a Vet 1 year deal makes sense this year for LG).

Their plan is probably have a Thuney replacement already on the roster or draft a later round guard. They need to find a LT. That’s their priority. This move frees up money to do that.
