The defense won those games. Rob Johnson also effectively won the Titans game, which most people forget. Flutie had the same opportunity at Miami the year before in the playoffs and predictably turned it over in the red zone, something that lost multiple games for the Bills in 1999.

It does not matter. There's a reason you don't pull your season-long starter QB & replace him with the backup come playoff time. No other team is dumb enough to do that.

I was at that Jax game. One of the most memorable sports experiences of my life! That jags team was really good too.

The naked bootleg/blown handoff?  I was there, too.  Still the loudest I ever heard the Ralph.

It was proven to be the right decision, unless you want to blame Rob Johnson for the ensuing kickoff after he led the game-winning drive.

It's interesting, I'm in the "they should've started flutie" camp, but I wonder if part of the reason the game was so close was that the titans couldn't really prepare for Johnson, vs having tape on flutie all season. I still think they should've started flutie regardless

Just to remind us all, Ralph mandated that Johnson start that game.

and again RJ left the field with a lead just like Josh Allen did in the 13 seconds game...

or maybe it looked like RJ sparked the offense with the win they had against the Colts, as Flutie lost to them in the season opener 13-31 and RJ beat them 31-6 in the season finale...

Fairly or unfairly, this is how I remember Flutie:

He'd play like badger doo-doo for three quarters, but our stout defense would keep us in the game.

Then in the 4th quarter, Flutie would do something magical with his legs or complete an unlikely pass and be hailed as the hero of the game.

Flutie wasn't a sack machine... 3.28% vs. Johnsons 21.32%... 21.32!! Some of those plays were Flutie throwaways, other's were potential scrambles for yardage.  Either way - Field position, and sacks are generally drive killers.  Allen's absurdly low sack% today is one of the most underrated features of his game.

His first year the offense was actually.. pretty good?  7th in scoring, 6th in yards, 3rd in turnovers, 12th in passing, 3rd in rushing.

6 teams ahead of buffalo in scoring:

Vikings - Moss rookie year

Denver - Super bowl champions, terrell davis

49ers - Steve young and garrison hearst

Atlanta - Chris chandler and jamal anderson

GB - Brett Favre

Guess what in his second year, we slid to 15th in scoring. In his last 5 starts of 1999 Flutie and the offense were averaging 17 points a game (inflated because of 31 points outing) You know kills drives too? Turnovers had 22 of them in 15 games. 1999 Flutie was not even close to the production we got in 1998 and why he got benched.

I don't disagree that he was worse in his 2nd year, or that the offense in general was probably worse.  They were still 9th in the league though in turnovers, 3rd in 3rd down%, and 8th in rushing.  The offense to me, was incapable of being good since it ran through Linton and Smith.  Moulds Reed Price and Riemersma is a solid group that propped up the pretty lousy QB situation, but the problem with the offense was that it was a running offense with bad running backs and mediocre offensive line.

Rob Johnson could have played worse in the Titans game? I have to think Flutie upgrades QB to some extent. Even if it's with his mobility. Johnson took 6 sacks in that game.

Johnson sucked ! That entire thing was Jerry esk, and then to fire a winning HC totally ridiculous but that's what you get & the drought was probably karma .

I used to think both were good but johson was slightly better in that he gave us a better chance to win a chip.

now i think both kinda sucked, and johnson was slightly better in that he gave us a better chance to lose a heart breaker we shoulda won vs losing a game in desperation where it felt like we had a better chance to win than we ever really did.

back then the special teams were trash, the oline was awful at pass blocking, the skill talent was actually good, and the was simply disgusting dominant.

This is so Billsy...   25 years after the fact, we're still arguing about Johnson versus Flutie.

I enjoy it in a warped kind of way.

I see a lot of conjecture about Flutie and some believe he would have beat the Titans game in the playoff.  I can see it either way BUT there is thing no one has mentioned.

Fltuie was ALWAYS in in for Flutie first.  Flutie effectively divided separate that locker room, you were wither with Flutie or you were shunned. And true to form, after it was known Johnson would start the playoff game little Dougie was pouting on the bench during that playoff game, never once got up to help or give advice to Johnson.  As tight as the game was, had he EVER  and try to help Johnson or even encourage him, it could have easily been enough to secure a win.  We easily had  a shot at a Super Bowl which the Titans lost by 1 yard.
