Fairly or unfairly, this is how I remember Flutie:

He'd play like badger doo-doo for three quarters, but our stout defense would keep us in the game.

Then in the 4th quarter, Flutie would do something magical with his legs or complete an unlikely pass and be hailed as the hero of the game.

I don't think "Music City Miracle" would have happened had Flutie played instead of Johnson.

We probably would've been down by double digits at that point if the Little General had started that game. He was brutal in '99, especially towards the end of the year.

Rob Johnson could have played worse in the Titans game? I have to think Flutie upgrades QB to some extent. Even if it's with his mobility. Johnson took 6 sacks in that game.

Flutie was a turnover machine and offense with him in 1999 was averaging like 16 points a game with him at QB down the stretch. No guarantees he'd do better.

I mean, he orchestrated a game-winning drive. Not his fault they screwed it up, like always.

How I remember Flutie...

Post game interview after a win "I did this, I did that..."

After a loss "We could not do this, we could not do that..."

When leaving the stadium "Lowly Bills employee, bring me my car so I can avoid all these fans hanging out near the tunnel waiting for autographs"

And saying he's 5'10"?  Maybe in cleats.  I've stood next to him and he is my height, which is 5'8"

Flutie won 10 games, got them there. Flutie plays, Bills win. Full stop. R Johnson was pathetic.

.. and a safety, and an int. Johnson was the reason we lost that game. With that D, Flutie would have won that game. No question about it.

Just like he lead us to victory the previous season against Miami in the playoffs? Oh wait he got sacked by Trace Armstrong and fumbled with the game on the line then...

The defense won those games. Rob Johnson also effectively won the Titans game, which most people forget. Flutie had the same opportunity at Miami the year before in the playoffs and predictably turned it over in the red zone, something that lost multiple games for the Bills in 1999.
