That’s interesting. I love my beef on weck, but I’ve never had fries with gravy, and I wouldn’t even know where to go to get it. I’m not sure if I’ve ever even seen it in person. 🤷‍♂️

Fried and gravy is amazing.  Fried need to be firm but not greasy

Does anyone hang out in bars anymore?

I sit at a bar almost every day….for lunch as I drink my Arnold Palmer and read my book. Somewhere along the line I got very particular about not drinking and driving. Even a glass of wine with dinner makes me uncomfortable. Fortunately, the wife barely drinks any alcohol so I have a designated driver.

But to answer your question, I see adults gathering at bars with their beer and even drinking shots. That ended in college for me.

Yeah like once a week or after bad days I’ll go to the bar and get a drink.

I enjoy chilling out there a little and having some conversations with the bar tender there.

Well I’m an introvert so I actually enjoy sometimes brining a note pad to the bar and write out all the things on my head/need to get accomplished

I was thinking more to my “haunts of yore”, bars where I cash my paycheck, full bar after work, blue collar type crowd. Wife call, tell her I’m not here kind of place. They were commonplace, granted I’m going back to late ‘70’s through early ‘90’s…..might help explain my two divorces.

Anyway, I get the impression this isn’t as much a thing, given I see so many of those type places in the “old turf” gone.

It doesn't seem like the bar scene is what it used to be and I even hear the same thing from younger people I know so it isn't just a well now that I'm older and don't go to bars I don't think anybody goes kinda thing.

In my orginal post I mentioned happy hours or the occasional meet up with a friend for a few, that's about the only time I go to a bar these days and it isn't too frequent.

Some of the best poutine I’ve ever tasted is from a concession stand at a hockey rink up in Highgate, VT.  My son plays games up there a couple times per season, and I always get a double order.

My go to bar food is usually wings, but I also love some onion rings when I’m having a few beers. 🍻

Best poutine I ever had was at Fallsview Casino.  They had a little diner in the back of the casino. Fries were perfect, good amount of cheese curds and the gravy was amazing!

Go to bar food? Depends on the place, but usually wings or nachos.

That's called a "Gin Mill" AND they definitely served gravy over their beef on weck NOT bougie au jus!!

Where I grew up there was one on almost every block, most with the same layout: long bar, smallish back room.

Neighborhood dads go there to get “barley sandwiches”.

My mother uses the teem gin mill a lot. It’s where the boozers hang out.  😊

She’s 97, it’s too late for me to fix that.

Born during Prohibition!

Indeed, as were her friends, the boozers! My mother couldn’t drink any alcohol for decades for medical reasons. Her friends made up for her. They were the people who had their own bar stool at the same gin mill every day, and they would hold court there.

AND is she living the longest?

I am by far NOT a teetotaler, but alcohol doesn't add longevity!

Even saying... Really shouldn't touch it till 26 years or so old... That's full brain development...

Yeah part of the charm of the bar I go to is it's pretty introvert friendly.  I guess that's not what one has in mind with the bar scene?

There's one or two regulars there I see quite a bit.   But I've only seen like 2 or 3 times in the past year a group of more than three shooting the breeze with each other at the bar.

It's in a largely Hispanic city the bar where I hang out sometimes so I don't even think St. Patty's Day is a big thing.    But def some Irish pubs it's still very much a thing here.

Those kind of places are the hidden gems.  That would be my ideal place to hang these days

Anyway... If any of you get the bright idea to cash a paper check @ a bar... Beware, the owner probably use his mobile app, and holds your credit card with a $grand$ hold on it. 😆 It's 2025 dammit! Nachos cost $15... AND that pickle hardboiled egg in the jar on the bar?  Forget about it... Above your pay grade unless proprietor holds another $500.

She swore she would die when she was 92, because that’s when her mother and her grandmother died. She’s 97 now. Maybe those years she abstained bought us these last few years, but I should mention she’s going to be angry if she has another birthday!
