At first glance a 3rd seems startlingly low. But this is a good point from one of the reporters that initially broke the rumor:

 

If all we need to blow other offers out of the water is giving up one of our 2nds it's a no brainer. We'll have effectively traded over the hill Diggs for in his prime Metcalf. In that scenario the draft pick is practically a non-factor in my mind, it's really just about the money at that point.

Get Metcalf!!!....Crosby is off the table.. Garrett is a real long shot, and looks to be delayed until June.

 

It sounds like a 2nd would get it done, do it now - quickly get it done.  Throw in Elam if they want him.

 

Get Metcalf...re-sign Hollins...re-sign Ty....have Cook play out his contract (but draft an RB for backup)...and that is it for offense for 2025!

I’d go a 4th this year and a conditional pick next year that could be another 4th. Two 4ths sound fair

I'd also like to preemptively address the folks who will object that there are so many needs DE, DT, CB, S, that one just cannot expend so much draft capital and cap room on one or two players(some of them compulsively respond to anything too daring as if it is childish and unrealistic). The answer is that there will still be enough draft capital to acquire, say, a huge 1T later in a deep draft at DT. You can find serviceable players on day 3, something Beane has a knack for.

 

But what you won't get in the draft are elite playmakers -- and the deficiency just there is the key. Add DK and you've added a dangerous player that scares the opponent. Add Garrett, it's more than a piece, it elevates other players because of the stress he puts on the offense.

 

These are the moves that ought to be prioritized. Chess, not checkers, and some pieces are way more valuable than others.
