Doc Brown Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago Damn. That hurts. Would've given him that contract in a second. You can't surround the highest paid QB in the league with a below average WR core. 2 Quote
sven233 Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago I know some are disappointed by this. In a way I am as well because, as you all know by my posts, I continue to harp on the fact that this teams needs 2 WRs, not just 1. They need 2 guys at the top of this depth chart and Metcalf would have slotted in nicely. But I think there are other guys that can be traded for that will fill these spots nicely and may not cost quite as much. This is the frustrating part about being a fan. We don't get to know the conversations that are being had with other teams. For example, if Beane talking to the Saints about a guy like Olave? Are the Jets going to continue to blow it up and start over and have Wilson available? There may be numerous guys out there that we aren't even thinking about being available that we might be angling for heading into the draft. Yeah.....this would have been a nice idea and would have made us better immediately, but we just have to hope Beane is setting something else up that could be even better. I mean, he isn't blind. He knows our WR room is below average as a whole. Hopefully he has a plan to fix that. Quote

I hope you're right, but it would be well in keeping with Beane's typical stance on receivers to resign Hollins, bring in a receiver like Slayton in FA, and draft one early on day 3. Quote

We got away with it last season, but I don’t expect a full everybody eats approach to work quite as well again. it’s frustrating because it’s likely to happen I mean to give him credit, he did acquire Cooper and I think just having him was impactful to rest of the group do we re-sign Amari and hope that he’s healthy and has a strong season? There aren't a lot of obvious options. Maybe there's something no one is aware of in the way of a trade. Cooper is a possibility. You'd have to hope injury was a big factor last year, and that he has a bounce back year in him. You also have to hope Brady can properly make use of his weapons. I'm not entirely sold there. Some folks seem to think the mid-rounds have sneaky WR depth. I dunno, but last year was the year to invest in the position, and we took a big, slow slot receiver, a safety that better make a leap this year, and another DL that was apparently chosen for leadership qualities over pulling the trigger on a WR that could actually play the boundary. If you select that type in this draft, you're waiting on a development year. Quote

The problem with bringing him back might be that someone in the organization allegedly said that he was washed. I'd have him back at 1 yr $12mil but that's just me. Quote

I never felt really confident about him, but he might be the best option available. I think it is a terrible disservice to Josh Allen that it has come to this, and if his reward for a team-friendly contract (and it is, despite its generational wealth amount) is more of the same at the WR position, shame on Beane. buffblue Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago DK Metcalf is not a #1 wide receiver and never has been. He is a bit of a one trick pony. I don't think that either of these points are arguable. Not understanding why I should be upset about not trading a second and ponying up 30 million a year for someone of his caliber. Quote

So be both the contender and the team that pays the money. But when you're constantly focusing on retaining *SO* many of your decent to pretty good players (on top of having a big time QB contract) - you heavily cut into the cap in future years, making it difficult to spend the kind of crazy money it requires to get truly great players. I wonder what Tyreek Hill is feeling about his worth after this signing. I foresee interesting complications down in Dade County FL. Quote

But that's not a very compelling reason Those who think the approach to offense and scoring success from last year is easily replicable pair that with obvious defensive deficiencies to dismiss the importance of a boundary receiver with Metcalf's specific strengths. Why spend so much on a player like that when there are so many needs on D? And there are a lot of needs. I think the turnover margin which was exceptional last year will likely regress towards the mean, a likelihood increased by an offense that depends on sustained drives and lacks explosive play capability. It doesn't matter that Metcalf is not a conventional WR1. He is elite at his particular skill set, and it was a perfect match to what folks ought to want for Josh Allen and the Bills. It's not just about putting up points, but having elite difference makers that can be called upon in crucial moments in the biggest games. Low Positive may want to disparage this perspective, but it's certainly not indefensible, nor does it reduce to petulant emotional outbursts. If there is an echo of dismay over the failure to draft Metcalf in the first place, it is a resonance due to Beane's continuing incapacity to properly address the WR room, a proclivity he has carried with him from his Carolina days. The Metcalf contract is laughable imo and sure to stir up some drama. Look at the Bengals alone - both Chase and Higgins are far superior players and now this contract is thrown into the pot. 1 Quote
