As do major airlines, who have their own meteorology depts. It is true that rely on basic data from the NWS, but there has never been talk of completely eliminating that organization. Still, they are independent and produce their own product for their consumption. In addition, they operate and are interested on a very limited period of forecasting, and aren't really concerned beyond about 36 hours.

You have mentioned how the NWS employees are overworked. Can you share any specifics? How many hours does the typical NWS employee work? Do they get comp time or overtime pay? Anything at all?
