I said yes only because this draft is so loaded at that position.

Maybe. Then why would KC not use that pick for an economical RB that may be as good as Cook?

I said yes, it's better to get something rather than nothing if he leaves

We do get something from keeping him though. We get a year of his service in his prime for a relatively small salary.

I'm good with that also... I am just saying if we are guaranteed to lose him

No. It's like receiving a 3rd. If it was a high 2nd, then maybe

No, it’s like a 2nd, it’s still before the 3rd

63rd overall -  The Chiefs get a ready made running back with a single pick that they were going to use on a player anyways. Only “damage” you do is they have to pay Cook.

The Bills create a hole on their roster that needs to be filled properly with a Round 2 pick in order to get an upper tier back, or Beane drafts some Day-3 player that is a downgrade from Cook, which means that Ray Davis or Ty Johnson are the lead back now.  The Bills get slower and easier to defend.

But none of this would stop Beane. He’s shown he’ll take the call, meet the demands of the Chiefs and tell Bills fans that he doesn’t care it’s their main AFC rival.

63rd overall for Cook going to the Chiefs would be another overt slap in the face of the fans this organization loves to gas up with praise.

Ask yourself, how big is the gap between Cook for 2 downs and using Davis or Johnson for 3rd down bc Cook has so many holes in his game, vs letting Davis play?  I’d argue it’s not that big.  Certainly not 10M a year difference.  If Cook was a complete back, I’d be right there with you, but Barkley is worth 12 and Henry 8, Cook has no ground to stand on at all asking 15.

My thinking is a long the Family Guy joke:

"You can have the 2nd round pick you hit hitting a contract year...or a lower 2nd round pick than you used to draft him!"

"A second round pick? James Cook is great but a second round pick could be anything! It could be a James Cook!"

Look if we are getting some ludicrous offer or Cook is part of a package for a sure fire player (if it's Chris Jones and the Chiefs are making the money work) give me a call but let's not make them better for a maybe. I'm fine with draft picks but why give them a sure player

Andy Reid wants a known quantity at RB who's a dual threat.  Even at $15m a year.

Except he’s done exactly the opposite in KC, but cool story.

In this scenario we’d be getting pick 63 in the 2025 draft. We used pick 63 in the 2022 draft on him.

Beane just drafted Ray Davis in the 4th round last year.  He should be able to give you 90% of what Cook will give you.  You’d then be left with a second round pick AND $13?million of cap space that you wouldn’t otherwise have.  3 second round picks and an extra $50 million over 4 seasons would go a long way towards landing a player who would make a whole lot more difference than a good but not elite RB.

If you could guarantee me we’d be getting a DL who’s as good at his position as James Cook is at his, I’d entertain the trade. Without that guarantee, the 2nd round rookie has higher odds to bust or be nothing more than average than he does to become a pro bowl contributor.
