Mahomes was getting it out in 1.7 seconds. It wasn't pressure that was the issue it was coverage.

Are you sure? Technically, I'm not so sure that you can count 10 yds of cushion as "coverage"... I'm looking at you Kaiir.

That would have been a great thing to prioritize 4 or 5 years ago.

Umm ... the facts don't support your statement.

  • Six years ago (2019) they drafted DT Ed Oliver at #9.
  • Five years ago (2020) they drafted DE AJ Epenesa at #54.  They traded their first round plus some other picks for Stefon Diggs.   They added RB Zach Moss and WR Gabe Davis in the 3rd & 4th rounds.  They also draft Bass in the 6th round.   This was probably the only year that the Bills went heavily offense in the draft.
  • Four years ago (2021) they drafted DE Greg Rousseau at #30 and LB Boogie Basham at #61.
  • Three years ago (2022} they drafted DB Kaiir Elam at #23 and LB Terrel Bernard at #89.  They also signed LB Von Miller.  Also on that 2022 defensive roster were All Pro LB Matt Milano, S Jordan Poyer, S Micah Hyde, CB Tre'Davious White, and LB Tremaine Edmunds.

A lot of fans are taking the wrong message away from our loss and the Eagles Super Bowl win. My concern is that Beane is one of those fans.

I don’t see how it’s possible.

We haven’t been able to get Mahomes off his first and second reads in the playoffs with multiple All-Pros in the back 7.

We are not 1 offseason away from having a defense capable of what the Eagles did in the SB. Even if we got a Garrett or Crosby.

It’s more insanity I fear.

We have a small front 7 and a slow secondary.

People act like we play 90% zone 10% man lol

We've been in the upper third of the league in third down man defense the last couple years.. McDermott loves cover one man on third down in passing situations

We probably also finished the year playing around 40% man coverage all around towards the playoffs.. it's not like we sit in a soft Tampa two 85% of the game

I'm not as caught up with scheme anymore.  Sean will always emphasize his version of the zone and that will never change.  Our current problem is not x's or o's, it's Jimmy's & Joe's.  Our defensive personnel are to small and injury prone. They just are.  They can't survive a regular season.  By the time playoffs start, they start falling like dominoes.  We relied 80% on generating takeaways in order to mask our defensive deficiencies.  Get bigger, stronger and hopefully this new conditioning head will turn things around?

My bad.  I thought you were claiming that the Bills hadn't prioritized the defense, but when I read the post that you originally responded to, I saw that you were talking about size and speed on defense.

The only Magic needs to happen with our DL, because its not even close to being what we need.

One thing McDermott said that no one has mentioned is they talked Speed on the Defense.  But he said speed + small = no. He wants power, he wants size plus speed.

Basically, I want/need Kenneth Grant😎

We need to draft a gigantic DT this draft. No more excuses!

With Beane and McDermott they like those smaller, faster defensive players. I want a physical defense that can dominate at the LOS. Think 49ers, Ravens, Steelers as examples of that.

yep and the best part was it wasn't hidden in code or anything he said it right out.

People hear what they want to hear.

Man defense is this years number 1 wr.  They are just never going to shut up about it as if its some magic thing.

Its fascinating watching people twist things into something they can complain about.

Agreed, Man and Zone have their own particular weakness and Bene... in the end its about in what situation do you deploy them, what does your personnel allow, are you getting to the QB with 4, does the QB run, and what are the other teams tendencies..  In the end I have been on record as saying that I hated Babiches anticipation in game planning... he was fine adjusting, but was clearly not in tune with what the offensive game plan was going to be and how to take it away.... that to me was the biggest issue, not zone or man... but in the way it was deployed

In fairness the Eagles D sucked last year. Now I know they got a new DC too, and a significant upgrade at that, but they got 3 major impact players - Mitchell, DeJean and Baun and Nolan Smith took a critical step forward. Hitting big style on 2 draft picks, a FA and having a former first rounder make a leap is not easy... but Philly showed it is possible.

Get actual talent on defense, and watch the defense start to play well. Even against mahomes

Want to know why we couldn't stop mahomes this season?

Mahomes was able to walk up to the line of scrimmage and look for who elam was covering, if he didn't like that he could move on to Bishops responsibility, if he didn't like that he could move onto Hamlins responsibility

When you have no talent, it doesn't matter what the coaches do
