Bills and Khalil Shakir agree to 4-year extension ($60.2 million/$32 million guaranteed)

You know what I'm happy with this. I had been leaning towards not re-signing him because of positional value. But that is a very fair AAV and I can't complain about investing in the passing offense. He's only 25 years old too so there is still some upside there, and he's got established chemistry with Allen. Good work Beane.

So Shakir is worth $15 mill a season and Cook isn't LOL.

Shakir has 1443 yards and 6 TDs the last 2 season on 148 touches.

Cook has 2834 yards and 24 TDs the last 2 season on 520 touches, has made 2 Pro Bowls and was just voted to the NFL top 101 players by PFF.

People who want to trade Cook instead of extending his contract need to re-think their priorities.

I'm glad our management is finally invested in our drafted  and developed skill players.  It's long overdue.

Not to mention RBs are asked to pass protect. You’ll get no arguments from me, RB and WR contract differences are out of whack. J Jefferson can’t be worth $35M/yr while Saquon Barkley ($13M AAV) and King Henry ($8M AAV) are that much less.

It’s about the market for their labor. Supply and demand dictates the price.

Can't happen, you can't get guys like Crosby, Garrett or Parsons for that amount of money.   Parsons will end up signing somewhere around $33M AAV.

That's the going rate for people of Rousseau's and Benford's quality.   Rousseau is an above average ascending starting DE, that's what they cost.  Benford's level of play has been near elite and that's what they cost.   You don't get rid of your two most valuable defenders who are young and ascending because you don't want to pay the going rates.

The salary cap has exploded the past 2 years by $50M and 4 years from now it will be up somewhere between $100 - $130 M more.     Inflation baby!!

Didn't you and I have some arguments regarding Spencer Brown?   You said $17M a year was way too much, I said that it wasn't.  Turns out that you were right that $17M was what he was worth, he really is worth closer to $20M AAV.

Look at who you're arguing with

I believe they’ll extend Cook.  Some deals take longer to work out than others.

Agree on Rousseau and Benford.  Not certain I'd certain I'd want to go there yet on the other two.

Read an article yesterday how Cook is asking to be paid like the elite, but he is on the field at a much lower percentage than these others.  Rarely does he play on 3rd down.

It's a negotiating ploy, he's trying to maximize and I don't begrudge the man for doing so.  This is most likely going to be the last time in his life to have a shot at making legacy defining sort of money.  The way I saw it was that by him throwing that $15M a year number around, that was his beginning asking amount.  I think they will get a deal in for less than that.

What is also going to effect his FA value is that this is a potentially historic year for RB's coming out in the draft this year.  Many think this could be one of the best RB drafts ever, so his value will be impacted by that.   I think they get the deal done at around $12M AAV

Different positions have different value.

I want to sign cook to an extension,  but this comparison is apples and oranges.

Cook will get a nice contact from us,  I don't think he's going anywhere.

I think this is a good deal for both sides. It will likely be an underpay, but Shakir locks in generational wealth. He’ll have another kick at the can in his 20s for another good deal.

$15m was my ceiling number and this is pretty much bang on it (and sounds from reporting as though some is incentive driven). Khalil has taken a little bit less than he'd have to on the open market I suspect. Presumably he decided staying here with Josh was best for him long term.

Let's wait and see the detail which, as ever, matters. But on the face of it it's a fair deal.

The pendulum is swinging back toward the RBs.  With the exception of KC, nearly all the playoff teams had a nearly 50/50 run pass balance.  Some of that was helped by mobile QBs like Allen, Hurts and Lamar, but so did the performance of gifted backs like Robinson, Cook, Barkely, Henry etc...  Also their were only 16 1000 yard backs last year vs 22 1000 yard receivers.

Shakir making 15mm per year is the 23rd highest paid WR

If Cook gets paid 15mm per year that would make him the 2nd highest paid RB

Anyway, I think this is a really good deal for the Bills. Estimates had Shakir's next contract close to 20mm. He's a no-drama WR that just catches pretty much everything in his direction.
