Roundybout Posted February 23 Posted February 23 (edited) Yes, it's generally a good thing for the neonazi party to be watched. Even if AfD gets a bigger share of the parliament, every other party has refused to work with them. It will be impossible to form a coalition. I am hopeful that Merz and the CDU get the majority. SPD will decide who is the next chancellor, AFD will likely offer a lot of concessions to get there backing, so we will see. If the AFD backs CDU you are correct and it will make the AFD meaningless.
Big Blitz Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 Germany's conservatives won the election on Sunday, February 23, with their leader Friedrich Merz set to become the next chancellor, followed by the far-right AfD in second place after record gains, according to exit polls. If confirmed in the final count, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) roughly doubled its score to at least 19.5 percent, boosted by fears over immigration and security after a spate of deadly attacks blamed on asylum seekers. For now, the AfD – basking in the vocal support of key allies of US President Donald Trump – is set to stay in opposition. All other parties have vowed to keep it out of power and behind a "firewall" of non-cooperation. But its jubilant leader Alice Weidel hailed the "historic" result. https://www.lemonde.fr/en/europe/article/2025/02/23/germany-s-conservatives-led-by-merz-win-election-far-right-afd-follows-in-second_6738475_143.html 1

B-Man Posted February 23 Posted February 23 President Donald Trump released a statement And, as usual, the left refuses to accept an election outcome. Quote New Right party AfD doubled its votes and emerged as 2nd strongest party (behind the Christian conservative cducsubt). But Germany’s socialist chancellor Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz called on election-losing socialists not to accept the election results. 1

Doc Posted February 23 Posted February 23 The question is if this is the CDU of Merkel, which leaned left after getting into power, or the center/center-right version?
