NFL coaches have this weird mythical power when it comes to talking about their ability. The reality is that there are a lot of solid/good coaches and a lot of bad coaches. And that difference is very narrow.

“Build culture and legacy” by drafting a bunch of HoF players all the time.

 

We see this play out time and again.

 

Bill Belichick was mediocre without his HoF QB. His culture in New England is in shambles because they don’t have enough good players. How could that happen, with the most buttoned up coach with a strong culture in recent NFL history?

 

Oh, it’s because all of that is fairy dust nonsense.

 

Maybe Chan Gailey wins 4 Superbowls if he drafted Tom Brady. Does it make him a great coach or does it mean that coaches aren’t that freaking important?

 

For the truly inept, unprofessional, unserious organizations, sure you’d like a culture setter instead of a buffoon. But that’s about it.

The Steelers sure did make it routine to draft future HOFers. They got four HOFers in their ‘74 draft alone! Unbelievable.

The surefire way to be very competitive and compete for Super Bowls is to continually draft dominant all pro and HoF level players.

 

The Seahawks went from an average to mediocre team and over the course of 2-3 drafts acquired the core group of that SB team. 

They never drafted that well again and they slipped right back into who they were before.

 

Even Belichick, the greatest defensive coach ever, had multiple years with a BAD defense because they didn’t have the horses.

 

Jimmies and Joes matter so much more than folks give them credit. It’s an actual crime that I don’t know who was in charge of the FO in those Steelers days when everyone knows Chuck.

The Rams did it and won, The Bucs did and won and the Eagles just did it and won. Those are all recent winners.

That's one time and they were 13 seconds away.  The Eagles had a bunch of void years added on to contracts win now and the Rams traded a bunch of picks to win their Super Bowl. 

 

Both teams mortgaged their future to win now.  I would rather win a Super Bowl, then be in the mix each year and never win one.

Eagles have been to 3 SB past 8 seasons and won 2 of them.

 

I'd rather win 2 of 3 SBs in 8 years than win the AFCE every year....
