If you wait to June 1st you have to carry his whole cap during the spring.  They need some of that money for FA IMO.

We’re keeping AJE, Bass (unless he craps the bed in TC), McGovern, and Jones. Possibly Lewis because TJ is showing signs of his body breaking down and Lewis is familiar with that specific NCB/in-the-box Safety/mini LB role. 
 

Miller, Rapp, Trubisky, and Martin must be moved on from at their current numbers. Miller is a shell of his former self. Rapp’s playing style combined with his inability to absorb his own punishment means he’s a backup - at best. Trubisky can stay on a vet minimum salary. Martin can be replaced with a lower cap hit player. 
 

And, again, the only 3rd rounder that would be involved with a David Edwards trade is us including our 3rd round pick to get someone to take his salary. Watch the AFCCG - he was bad. 

 

I think 3rd rounder is too much obviously... but he played 1000 snaps for one of the better offenses, and offensive lines, in the NFL.  There's a market for his services, and he is a starter for many teams in the league.

You don’t have to wait until 6/1. You can cut him with a 6/1 DESIGNATION before that. Think T White last year.

Yes, I know.  BUT the team would have to carry his complete cap hit until June.

Cut him in March so the cap savings can be used in FA.

Perhaps they can free up money with restructures or extensions.  It all depends on which FAs they want to go after.

I'm curious to see if the Bills strongest OL config is Anderson at C and McG back at LG. He was a plus at C in '24 but was plus-plus at G in '23. Of course then you'd be bringing in Grable or Van Demark for jumbo sets.

With the OL, Beane signed McGovern and Edwards and then went and drafted Torrence and a flyer on Broeker,

in a draft of only 6 players.

 

Broeker was a solid value, most years he'd have made the team. He was worlds better than Quessenberry and Boettger in preseason, he just didn't look as good as Anderson did. The Texans nabbed him off waivers and he's still there.

Trubisky is an easy cut but I wonder if they keep him through the offseason and preseason. 
I think part of the allure for the bills to having vet QB backups is having them help organize offseason throwing sessions and such with the team, like when Davis Webb was on the team.

True.  Although the Top 51 cap limit is not affected much by draft picks.  Temas need that cap space for FA the most.

The Bills typically need only $2M to sign their draft picks.

@GASabresIUFan I am not and expert, but I don't think Von's numbers are correct. Those are numbers before incentives which he has reached. I guess that they will increase dead cap. Someone will surely educate me

Their rationale is with a $4.9 mill price tag and only 875K dead cap if released he’s a likely candidate because of young talented depth on the roster like Anderson, SVPG, and Grable.  IMHO this is an unnecessary risk to the strength of the roster.  I also think if they wanted to open a space for one of the kids, Edwards would be traded, not released.  The Bills received a 5th for Bates last year and he wasn’t even a starter.  Surely Edwards is worth a 3rd rd pick.  Given our lack of a 3rd rd pick in the draft, a trade makes significantly more sense.

D. Jones - Cap 9.408. Dead Cap 7.632 - Savings 1.776

McGovern - Cap 9.385 Dead Cap 7.74 - Savings 1.645

AJE - Cap 7.487 Dead Cap 4.1.48 - Saving 3.339

Edwards - Cap 4.905 Dead Cap .875 - Savings 4.03

Bass - Cap 4.67 Dead Cap 3.06 - Savings 1.61

Rapp - Cap 3.667 Dead Cap 1.333 - Savings 2.334

Trubisky - Cap 3.25 Dead Cap .750 - Savings 2.50

Martin - Cap 2.485 Dead Cap .400 - Savings 2.085

Lewis - Cap 1.969 Dead Cap .213 - Savings 1.756

 

Obviously most of these cuts won’t occur, but Beane could restructure guys like McGovern or Jones through a void year or two to create more current savings and push the kick down the road.  
 

Also some of the cuts create little savings when you factor in the cost of the replacement.  For example Martin (P) who was solid last year costs 2.485.  His dead cap is 400K, but Camarda, a potential replacement on the roster costs 1.1 mill.  The net savings is less than $1 mill.  Not sure it’s worth the hassle unless Camarda really outkicks him in the pre-season.  

After putting together the list, I can see why the RDC focused on Edwards.  A potential $3-4 million dollar savings is worth exploring if management feels Anderson, Grable or SVPG is truly ready to start.  As the article pointed out Edwards was the 6th OL in 2023 before starting.  Maybe Anderson is ready to replace him after being the 6th OL in 2024.  The real question is do we really want to mess with one of the strengths of the roster?

 

You don't touch anyone on what is considered one of the best OL's in the NFL and the best of Josh's career. Hell No.

That’s what we said last year.   Beane then traded Bates, dumped Morse, moved McGovern to center and moved Edwards into the starting lineup and created the best line we’ve had despite a very very good year in 2023.  He also eliminated most of the experienced depth and went with a bunch of kids as depth and they played well. 
 

That said, I am generally in agreement with you, but Beane is not predictable.

I won't be shocked if they cut him for sure.  

Even if they draft a guy similar to him, they want to see better performance. They know what they have in Jones.  They need to see something different.

I'm cutting all 4. Edwards did not play well against the Chiefs. The AJE extension was stupid. And yes Von and DQ are done. We can bring up the young OL depth at guard.

If you are going after a big fish in the edge pool via trade or FA you cut AJE and put that money towards it. If you are relying on drafting a rookie at that spot you keep him. 

 

That is the calculation for me.

Ya, only thing you could hang your hate on is he stayed healthy. But definitely agree, it comes fast for the big guys, I think it'd be worth keeping him this year, the savings are too low and he'll at least be a serviceable rational DT, hopefully Carter and a rookie or 2 make the leap. 

Draft is deep with DTs, hopefully we can find a difference maker that can also get the best out of Oliver
