Potential Cap Casualties 2025

Besides the obvious cutting or restructuring of Von Miller, who are the other potential cap casualties?

 

The Rochester paper thinks David Edwards could be cut.  https://www.democratandchronicle.com/sports/
 

Their rationale is with a $4.9 mill price tag and only 875K dead cap if released he’s a likely candidate because of young talented depth on the roster like Anderson, SVPG, and Grable.  IMHO this is an unnecessary risk to the strength of the roster.  I also think if they wanted to open a space for one of the kids, Edwards would be traded, not released.  The Bills received a 5th for Bates last year and he wasn’t even a starter.  Surely Edwards is worth a 3rd rd pick.  Given our lack of a 3rd rd pick in the draft, a trade makes significantly more sense.  
 

Other potential cap casualties (I’m not saying any of these are likely, just possible)

Miller - Cap 23.814 Dead Cap 15.417 - Savings 8.397
D. Jones - Cap 9.408. Dead Cap 7.632 - Savings 1.776

McGovern - Cap 9.385 Dead Cap 7.74 - Savings 1.645

AJE - Cap 7.487 Dead Cap 4.1.48 - Saving 3.339

Edwards - Cap 4.905 Dead Cap .875 - Savings 4.03

Bass - Cap 4.67 Dead Cap 3.06 - Savings 1.61

Rapp - Cap 3.667 Dead Cap 1.333 - Savings 2.334

Trubisky - Cap 3.25 Dead Cap .750 - Savings 2.50

Martin - Cap 2.485 Dead Cap .400 - Savings 2.085

Lewis - Cap 1.969 Dead Cap .213 - Savings 1.756

 

Obviously most of these cuts won’t occur, but Beane could restructure guys like McGovern or Jones through a void year or two to create more current savings and push the kick down the road.  
 

Also some of the cuts create little savings when you factor in the cost of the replacement.  For example Martin (P) who was solid last year costs 2.485.  His dead cap is 400K, but Camarda, a potential replacement on the roster costs 1.1 mill.  The net savings is less than $1 mill.  Not sure it’s worth the hassle unless Camarda really outkicks him in the pre-season.  

After putting together the list, I can see why the RDC focused on Edwards.  A potential $3-4 million dollar savings is worth exploring if management feels Anderson, Grable or SVPG is truly ready to start.  As the article pointed out Edwards was the 6th OL in 2023 before starting.  Maybe Anderson is ready to replace him after being the 6th OL in 2024.  The real question is do we really want to mess with one of the strengths of the roster?

Nobody in The League is gonna trade a ham sandwich for Edwards, let alone a 3rd. 
 

Edwards was pretty terrible in the AFCCG and could (probably will) be cut for cap savings.

I'd cut Von and Daquan because I think they are done basically. I'd consider cutting AJE too but possibly not until after the draft. I wouldn't cut Edwards.

Joe Marino made a case to cut Edwards.  Not for his play but just because the pipeline of talent is there with Anderson and grable and it saves money.

I wouldn't cut daquan until after the draft honestly.  I mean I wouldn't do it at all and I am of the belief they will draft two DT's but i can't imagine they do it before the draft.

 

on the other hand, waiting until after the draft to cut him  is a really lousy way to treat people.  That is not really in the Bills DNA to behave like that.

 

So I guess if they want to cut jones it will be early in the league year so he can find another job and they can use that money.

 

I am hoping they do not though.   A DT Group of Ed, Jones, Carter and two rookies one who might be a first rounder or 2nd rounder could be a really good group.  if you cut jones then you have to replace him along with bringing in new guys who are hopefully difference makers, jones is a good player to have as part of the rotation.

I just feel like after they cut him they are going to be looking for a guy just like him on a 1 year cheap deal.  Kind of like what they have in him already.

 

Maybe they cut him and use the money to bring back smoot and then draft two young dt's.  

 

I won't be shocked if they cut him for sure.

Only guy on that list worth cutting is Von, the rest I don't see the savings vs finding a replacement does anything to help us. I wouldn't be opposed to package AJE to acquire a Garrett or Crosby back in a trade.

Imo, von is gone minus a very team friendly restructure, which wouldn't be a terrible idea

Von is a no brainer. 

 

I'm going to go out on a limb and say we cut Bass and Martin as well. Not a whole lot of savings, but they are both pretty bad.

 

Bass played well down the stretch, and was perfect in the playoffs. I just don't see how you can have confidence in the guy after how shaky he was in last years playoffs and most of this season.

 

Martin flies under the radar but he's easily a bottom 10 punter. Bad gross and net averages. He has a very slow release that led to the blocked punt vs Rams that probably cost us that game.

and we could have his replacement already in toe with Camarda. (pun intended).

@GASabresIUFan I am not and expert, but I don't think Von's numbers are correct. Those are numbers before incentives which he has reached. I guess that they will increase dead cap. Someone will surely educate me

The questions are: Do we already have the replacement on the roster? Can equal production be replaced in FA for less than the savings?

 

If either answer is yes, then they're likely cut. You can factor in morale, and team chemistry, but those are smaller considerations.

 

With this being stated, I see Miller, Trubisky, Edwards, and Martin as cuts. That's about $17mil in savings based on those numbers. I'm sure there are post-June 1st designations that would change those figures.

I think he is finished. I wouldn't keep Jones at any money. I don't think he is physically able to contibute anything beyond replacement level play.

Those numbers are directly from Spotrac and the 8.4 savings before June 1 has been widely reported.  

 

I also doubt they’ll cut either Jones or McGovern.  The savings aren’t great enough and you can’t replace them for the little money saved.  I can see some type of restructuring to reduce their cap hit this year. 
 

If we learned anything from last off-season, Beane has a plan and no one except Josh is safe.

None of the guys from the O line will be going any where this season, the only 3 i see that could is Von, Tribisky, & Jones . Jones is getting pretty long in the tooth so is Von and that is pretty much the only reason i would think they might be gone & they have 4 QB's on the roster which any of the others would be cheaper than Mitch .

I know Von has pleaded through the media that he wants to remain a Bill, but i think it's a foregone conclusion that he's gone this offseason and as for the rest?!?..........well, insert name here and color me shocked, as i don't really think there's too many names that are really moving the needle here.

That’s why I made the list.  Not a ton of real net savings to be had without June 1 designations or other restructuring.

 

I’m actually in the camp of Miller returning at a greatly reduced contract value.  Maybe down to the 8 mill range.  I don’t know how that works with the cap or CBA, but getting him down to that kind of $ unlocks most if not all of a June 1 cut without creating another roster slot to fill.

 

FYI:  Jones already has a 3.724 million dollar dead cap hit in 2026.  
 

Besides Miller, I’m cutting AJE because he was awful last year at the pass rush and RDC convinced me to at least consider trading Edwards.  I do believe Beane unlocks most of the cap savings this season through restructuring Dawkins, Milano and others.
