Gilberto Posted February 14 Posted February 14 I agree with the general consensus on the board that they need to draft better in the early rounds. And also, when reading the comments about how "X player was still on the board when they drafted X player" I think that there is always a hindsight bias when comparing these picks. Obviously in hind sight its easy to see the players that Buf SHOULD have drafted lol. I clearly SHOULD have invested heavily in Amazon stock in the early 2000's, But I did not. Quote

Yes hindsight plays a big part but when for example Coleman played out like his scouting report said, it would have made much more sense to try and move up for Thomas. As others have said it feels like Beane and company are too focused on culture and scheme fit over BPA 1 Quote
Success Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Kind of made me sad reading this. It's not wrong. And "McBean" isn't BAD. But they're not great. They're pretty middlin', and without Josh Allen, we'd have probably made some changes. If we win a SB, it will be more than 80% Josh. 2 1 Quote

Are we content w/ that one decision, which keeps us in the mix every year? We need to set the bar higher. Beane has to do better. I'm tired of watching Allen carry this team like a massive weight on his shoulders, while Mahomes can get away w/ average play and his coaching and defense carry him to title game after title game. After the injury, he wasn't the same player. I think the fans should give him -and Beane - a little grace considering that Allen wanted Coleman specifically, and he was doing really well. If he doesn't move forward this coming year, then have at it. Same thing with Kincaid. He had a top 10 all time rookie year for tight ends. Let's give him a chance to move past his injuries. I'd like sure-fire winners with my top picks also but that's not necessarily a given at the back end of the round. Edited February 15 by Lothar 1 Quote
Billzgobowlin Posted February 15 Posted February 15 I'd take Beane's draft over Monos anyday. Allen>Manuel Quote
Aussie Joe Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Monos comments about the Shaq Lawson pick on his watch We wanted a DE …( sounds similar to a criticism of Beane being position focused) , that was a bad draft in general ( excuse making) Shaq was our best option ( apart from Chris Jones lol), Shaqs deal was he came in and needed surgery straight away… ( they knew about it apparently but medical guys don’t always know their stuff) , Shaq wasn’t the best in shape …. Yeah … maybe he shouldn’t be criticising anyone else .,.. 3 Quote

Pretty good listen for those interested (this podcast is non paywall): https://www.golongtd.com/p/pod-state-of-the-buffalo-bills-with -Monos criticizes Beane/McDermott for the 1st and 2nd round selections they've made. Says they've done much better in the mid-rounds but says the 1st and 2nd rounds are the GM and the coach picking, and they simply haven't been good enough there. He thinks Beane needs to defer to someone else if need be to make those picks if he must and says self reflection needed. -Monos: "Brandon Beane was never a scout, he was a salary cap operations type. He knows how to organize. I'm not saying they shouldn't have their jobs...the goal is for sustained success...and that's what the Bills have...I think the Bills need to understand, who is the trusted talent evaluator in that building? Who is making these calls in the first and second round? Where are the big physical freaks?" -Monos on Buffalo's potential interest in a Myles Garrett trade: "You should want Myles Garrett. Go get him. It might help you win the Super Bowl. But that's lazy GM'ing. That's a lazy GM in my opinion. That's an easy one. The hard GM's are finding those first round." There was a discussion about NFL teams likely trying to replicate Philly's defensive approach after the Super Bowl by loading up on DL. But he says it's not like teams don't already try to do that. Buffalo has tried. They've drafted D-Line, and they took a big swing via free agency for Von Miller hoping it'd put them over the top and it backfired. -Monos criticizes Beane/McDermott for bringing up the refs/officials before the Chiefs game and again afterward. He says it's loser talk. Dunne questions why they would even plant the seed of doubt in players' minds ahead of the game. Why let your players play the victim role? (Monos agreed.) -Monos criticizes the Bills' poor safeties, calling Bishop "a linebacker." -Monos doesn't seem high on the Coleman pick and returned to his talking point about Buffalo not getting enough true difference makers at the top of the draft. "Guys that run 4.2's, they don't exist later in the draft. Coleman types exist later in the draft. You can get big jumpball wideouts that can't run. That's what the fourth round is for." -Dunne noted that McDermott is entering his 9th year and only three coaches ever - Tom Landry, Hank Stram, Bill Cowher - have ever won Super Bowls that deep into their tenure with an organization. "Even Andy Reid had to leave Philly and draft Mahomes before he got his first ring." -Monos wonders if McDermott wrestles control of defensive play calling in playoff games. "I'd like to ask somebody on that staff if Sean does call any defenses in playoff games? I have a feeling there might be some...which is fine, that's your right to do whatever you want." -Dunne: "I think the GM understands everything should revolve around Josh Allen. I don't know if I can say the same about McDermott....he says complimentary things about him. When it comes to managing the game, what kind of game it's going to be, how the roster should be constructed, I'm not sure he sees it the same way as the GM. Gut feeling." -Monos says he wouldn't pay Cook what he wants. Yah what was this guys record while he was employed by the Bills and who did he bring in that were huge stars that kept the team going to the play offs year after year ?? Beane has publicly said he needs to do better and give McD and the coaches better players so it's not just falling to the way side he knows his own short comings . What is Monos doing now ? What team does he have going to the play offs and Championship games each year ?? 1 Quote
thenorthremembers Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Far be it from me to criticize the Memphis Showboats GM but McDermott and Beane have been here longer than Monos was in the NFL. So essentially, his opinion is about as good as Deleware Don's. Screw this guy. 1 Quote

How much of the success of Beane/McDermott is just getting lucky with Allen? I mean, how much of Bill Belichick’s success was because of Tom Brady, or Mike Tomlin because of Big Ben? A lot of coaches are nothing more than mediocre without the horses. Luck is an element of a lot in life, although Beane did a lot to position the team to be able to draft someone like Josh, and both and McD have done a lot of the offensive of the ball to help aid Josh’s development too. finn Posted February 15 Posted February 15 2 hours ago, GunnerBill said: That is standard practice around the league Day 3 is the scouts day. If you think Brandon Beane is an expert on all the guys they pick day 3 that is just not how it works. Days 1 and 2 are the execs. Day 3 is known as "the working man's day" and it is when you find out how good your road scouts are. No, my point was that Beane might want to better heed his scouts' advice on day one and two, not just on day three. It's appropriate the execs make the final calls in the draft, since there are considerations the execs know about and the scouts don't. But, as we at TBD know all too well, it's easy to fall in love with players and feel positive you're right, since, after all, you've read two draft magazines and saw a lot of highlights on YouTube. If I'm Beane, I go with the scouts unless I have very, very good reason not to. Quote
