Looking at the draft and reading about how deep the defensive line is

I'm convinced the bills will go for vet help in the secondary and young draft picks along the line

I agree, if we fail to land Crosby or Garrett then we better take DL in our first 3 picks. You can land dbs later in the draft or sign a DJ Reed.  We need to finally hit on young Dlineman on rookie deals.  We can't afford anymore Epenesa's or Bashams.  Maybe use the 4th round to find a wr?

The NFC champs just humiliated the Chiefs by rushing just four and dropping seven. Beane sees this and eyes the upcoming draft, determined to build a dominating defensive line. In fact, he's so eager, he may double dip and draft two defensive ends in the first two rounds AND add one of the best defensive linemen in the league, even if it blows up the cap for years to come.

That was 2021. Four year later, he's in the exact same position.

My point: Don't get your hopes up. Like McDermott, Beane might be just good enough to lose.

(P.S. I'm a Bills fan. My hopes are up no matter what. Sigh.)

damn this post hits hard… lol

2021 was not the year they added Von. 2021 they added Groot and Boogie to the Hughes/Addision combo. 2022 which would have been Groot and Boogie's second year in the league is when they added Von Miller. The person is a bit off on their time tables. Von was a big time win now move but it was done a year after the draft double dip.

If you sign a vet corner to replace Douglas you can and need to invest a high pick at WR unless you can somehow find a vet WR. As good as the offense was it didn't start to really hum until they added Amari Cooper. If you can't find a capable veteran boundary WR then you need to invest a high pick there. Doesn't have to be pick 30 but one of the two second round picks should be a WR. The Bills can draft a DE and DT in the first two rounds and still have a pick left over to add a young WR.

I’m all in on getting Crosby or Garrett or ( fill in vet DE in his prime) to play opposite of Groot.  My one caveat is that we need to keep both 2nds to be used on a corner and WR.  This strategy may depend on what management thinks about 2nd year players Carter and Solomon and whether they want Miller back as a situational pass rusher.

I think there is a 50/50 chance Miller returns at a significant decrease in salary and cap cost. Remember if they cut him they save 8 mill, but then have to find a replacement.  I’d rather cut AJE whose pressure % was terrible.

If they bring back Miller and acquire Crosby, the line looks something like this.

Starters - Groot, Oliver, Jones & Crosby

Backups - Miller, Solomon, Carter plus a rookie middle rd pick like Pegues who has good upside.

This frees up the 2 2nd rd picks to add a WR like Bond and a CB like Hairston.

I just totted up and Draftek has 32/100 and PFF has 28.

My board isn't yet advanced enough to count but I'd say my guy Matt is in the ballpark.

You mean you are in your guys Matt ballpark? ;)

Which one is most like Epenesa? We need his backup.

Unfortunately the emoji voting thing would not allow me to give you a laugh and cry at the same time.

With the recent signing of defensive coaches and in particular someone to assist with the defensive backs and defensive line, it is not a stretch to assume they will invest via the draft in those areas and took steps to get the right guys in the house who can coach up those players better and faster than what we have seen over recent seasons.

Going out on a limb here, but with Rebrovich coming in to assist with the d-line and both Nielson and Pellegrino having strong DB resume's OBD seems to be stocking up on the coaches that can get the job done in those areas.

Just my opinion, but I think it makes sense... then I would expect them targeting someone who can stretch the field with hands to challenge some of the matchups we had at the boundary. I feel good about our depth at TE and OL, even our depth at RB is not terrible although I would hate to lose Cook. The kid had a great year so of course he would look to parlay that into $. Depth at LB is never a bad idea with Milano usually dinged up and that position is one where we have a lot of injuries over the course of a season.

I know there are folks that want us to break the bank on getting a premier veteran DL prospect - I struggle with just the idea of being in cap jail for many seasons like we had with the Von Miller deal. I always prefer to build through the draft, but who knows if Garret really wants to be on a contender he should know that the Bills have been knocking on the door for a while now.

Sorry, go ahead and draft DL... heck sign a FA DL... but please for the love of god go get a proven commodity that will wreck games ... this is not a down the road thing... this is a now thing.. Beane has been less than stellar in the above... sometimes a man has to know his limitations... he is just not good at it... get someone else in to help, fine awesome!... but from my perspective we are really close now... lets just get this done...

I'm worried that even if we do draft 2 DLs in the first two rounds, the guys we draft will be a healthy scratch for 8 of the 17 games & only play 25% of snaps of the games they aren't. Basically what they did with Javon Solomon. Our Defense tends to prefer replacement-level vets to young upside.

I'd love to have an impact rookie DL, I just don't trust McD use them.

You win SB's with elite players on rookie contracts.  Not signing a 33 year old washed pass rusher.  It's no news flash that Beane has historically struggled drafting defensive players.  I can't tell you why?  Brandon not only must draft heavy D this April, but these players must also be BPA.  We can no longer target specific positions in specific slots.

And as far as McDermott coddling new rookies, this ridiculous practice has got to stop. You sink or swim with these guys. Not bury them in the back of the closet because your GM screwed up.

This point always gets me when I think about it. You've got McD who is known for his defensive intelligence yet they can't seem to draft elite talent. It can be said that "elite talent doesn't just make itself known or guarantied". I get that. It can be said that McD doesn't have a say in the draft, but that's not true. Maybe we're just better at developing and not recognizing? Idk. I can't even say that's true or false. Maybe it just comes down to luck.
