For a team that preaches “signing your own” letting Cook walk while re-signing AJE would send the wrong message

Epenesa signed for just $6m per year for two years.  That ranks him tied for 74th among DE's (a premium positions).  Cook wanting $15m a year would rank him 2nd among RB's.  Just can't pay that kind of money to a RB in today's NFL unless he's the next Barry Sanders or something.

Not trying to state the obvious here, but the Bills didn't play him in the most important offensive series of the year, they should have but they didn't.  They played the 2nd and 3rd stringer over him with a chance to goto the Super Bowl There is not a chance they pay him 15 mil a year....

Luv ya Jimbo but I'm not paying ya 15M.  Unless you can play DE.  This will be a very interesting extension?

I'm usually wrong but I said the day after the Jets game where his agent said he would play despite the toe injury (he didn't) that Cook will be the first holdout (or "hold in") in training camp since Beane became GM.

He can't pass block, so he isn't on the field during two minute drives or on 3rd down. He is a 50% of the snaps back. Yeah, he is excellent for what he does, but there's a reason he isn't on the field in key situations.

No way should he be making more than 10 million per year given the limitations of his game. Every single back on that list is an 80% of the snaps kind of back. Cook is not.

They did play him for one snap and he got destroyed trying to pass block. He is a liability when they need to throw it, so he doesn't play those critical downs where passing needs to be an option. He just doesn't have the frame for it.

They pry should've ran the ball on that one play (or the next).  Plenty of time left at over 3:30.  All three time outs.  Only down a FG.  Want to run some clock so we leave Mahomes with as little time as possible at the end of regulation.  Ok.  That's my final spiel about that game and I'm on to Cincinnati.

Gotta start high in negotiations. That being said it is not a realistic ask either. I suspect the Bills will be comfortable giving Cook a 2 year extension that tacks on a little bit more to his current remaining year. Probably be comfortable adding 2-3 million for Cook this season and then giving him a 16-17 million dollar two years after that.

Hes not doing that, nor should he. Teams were watching that AFCCG. Cook’s on their radar. He gets to stay clean in this backfield with Allen taking the poundings, although he has been more physical between the tackles as needed. Cook should looking at $30M+ for that next deal.

I'd pay him 30 dollars and even bump it up to 31 dollars with incentives.

I’m not. The men making those decisions are back at it next year to get out coached perhaps again.

I think I died alone being on the Allen should've checked it down to Diggs hill against KC the year before instead of a low percentage shot to Shakir in the end zone.  I'm on to Cincinnati. :)

My honest guess for his extension would be in-between the following

4 years 32 million but 20 or slightly more guaranteed

4 years 40 million but 15 guaranteed

Negotiate in the deal that there’s no public contract talk or distractions about money until that deal is up. Behind closed doors, cool

I loved the pass to Shakir. I lived with that one. It was there, and Chris Jones wrecked it

There’s a huge chasm between a James cook  and someone on the level of a singletary, a 2024 hunt or Pacheco. I don’t want to go back to those days. On top of everything else ‘24 cook was the most ball secure running back season the franchise has ever had. He’s probably going to become great at pass pro the way he is ascending.

So he should take our deal. Not middle on some 8-9 offensive line scrub team in the NFC South

if he were top 12-16 in pass blocking i'd prolly pay him that and have him on the field for like 60-75% of snaps.  as a weapon he's a top 3 back and young and efficient and shifty.

given he's like 45% of snaps, i think i'd go 12 or so MM a year.  10 was always the number i had in mind and i wouldn't let our best non allen weapon go over 2mm.

a franchise tag is that much, so we can just tag him for two years in a row (or transition, which is like 10).  as much as any nfl team we are a couple pieces from winning it all and we just blew out the ST coach and made about the biggest changes on D coaching that we've done since mcd took the team over.
