But they do have cap space. It comes down to is Terry is too caught up in paying for the stadium overages to cover the signing bonus required to make it all work.  3 premium picks, somewheres in 25ish in cap space to upgrade 1tech, Edge, corner, Wr.  Why do we need to trade the starting Rb to do that?  Cap is jumping massively in the next few years too. I dont understand the issue.

Is Cook worth top of the market? Is he the best back in the league?  I would have to say he’s not the best, but one of the better backs in the league.  

The real question is how much do the Bills value his production in relation to contract demands, versus Davis/Gore and Ty (if he is resigned) production in relation to their contract dollars?

 

I agree there are other players that will need to be signed over the next few years.  Certainly don’t want to jeopardize signing other guys by paying too much for a position that historically has not commanded top dollars.

One additional thought: Cook has already made a big mistake IMO. I do not know if his agent had a role in Cook going public when he did and with what he said, but the timing was not wise. We are still weeks away from free agency and have the draft after that. Any competent GM is going to cover his rear end - and that is going to severely damage Cook’s leverage. If James and his brother had waited until mid-May to do this, then the Bills might’ve been in a tougher spot. If Leist is smart, he’ll get something done quickly.

Long thread, so maybe someone else made this point already, but why would Beane extend Cook if he doesn't have to, given the other priorities and tight cap space? Especially with this bogus, pouting stunt? I hope Beane will do the smart thing: say nothing, let him play out his contract, and either extend him then or say goodbye, sending the message that you don't negotiate with the Bills via social media. Meanwhile, Cook will have all the incentive to turn in a stellar year since he's auditioning for a big contract from someone. 

 

Me, I hate this kind of posturing so much, I would deliberately try to extend everyone but Cook: Rousseau, Bernard, Shakir, Benford. Reward performance and a team-first attitude these players have displayed, and signal to Cook that he needs a new agent (and brother).

This is one of the reasons I don't mind how cook is handling it, he has made it known publicly what he feels he is worth and what he is asking for 

 

If he waited that's trying to put one over on his team, he didn't do that

 

As well as he has never once mentioned sitting or holding out. And for someone so direct with the money he wants if that was an option he would have mentioned it

 

This all tells me he is just being open and honest about what he wants and expects. He hasn't made one threat or negotiating in poor faith

The way i'm thinking is that if he has one more year on his rookie deal, then make him play it out and if he refuses, then sit him on the pine for the year and see how much he's worth next year with zero touches for the whole season.

See if you can make a trade and get him out of here. He's not worth 15 mil/year and if Beane bows down and pays this guy top tier RB money, then he is essentially waving the white flag to just another players demands that will handcuff this franchise when we have other players to pay and other holes to fill.
