How about let Bishop play for ***** sake. Some of us said at the start of the season we were wasting our time with Damar, he is he is and it’s not good enough. But he was the safe play because he knew the playbook better. Bishop improved the more time he was on the field, to bad he didn’t start all year and not just the last few weeks.

Now people want to move onto someone else after very little field time his rookie year. Wasting draft picks and spending more money, part of the reason why Beane and McD have ***** us.

Feels like putting a 2nd Round Pick into a Safety last season and then signing the most expensive Safety on the market this season is a lot of resources put into that position group.

But if they feel Cole Bishop needs another year after missing Training Camp last season (and looking overwhelmed as a Rookie) and the plan is to move on from Taylor Rapp after this year and have Cole Bishop replace him then - it could make some sense.

We do need a replacement and upgrade from Damar Hamlin. Though Holland would be a lot of money and I'd definitely be prioritizing the starting replacements at WR and CB and upgrades at DE and 1T DT first.

It's actually not a bad overall strategy to pair a rookie contract with a high end FA one.

I hope that you’re right. He may be. I don’t think that they can count on that though. If he develops, awesome. It should be a bonus.

He really did play better as the season went on, and the advanced stats show that.

Now I'm not advocating for all of these guys but I took a quick look through Free Agents that we might realistically add and here is my short list. This doesn't include guys like Mack Hollins and players we'd probably like to re-sign.

Wide Receiver- Nick Westbrook Ikhine Titans, Dyami Brown Commanders

Defensive Tackle- Sebastian Joseph Day Titans, Jarran Reed Seahawks, Odi Odigizuwa Cowboys

Defensive End- Malcolm Koonce Raiders, Michael Hoecht Rams

Safety- Jason Pinnock Giants, Andre Cisco Jaguars

Cornerback- Paulson Adebo Saints, Asante Samuel Chargers

My top guy to add would be Paulson Adebo. He's young, he's a great fit and is still young. He is coming off a leg injury so maybe he wont be a huge break the bank guy but he will get pretty good money in Free Agency. If your looking for a cheaper option, Samuel might be the way to go. He will also get a fair share of cash but he's also coming off an injury and his play hasn't been as good as Adebo.

Malcolm Koonce is intriguing to me. He had 8 sacks in 2023 and then tore his ACL and didn't play at all last year. He's still very young at 25 and he has major upside. He's familiar being a UB guy to the area.

Nick Westbrook Ikhine would be the deep threat that the Bills are looking for and is coming off a career year as a UDFA but its still less than 500 yards but he did have 9 TD's. Think he would be a better player with better QB player. Feel he would be in our range for a speed pass catcher.

I don't think we will go after a Safety that demands high dollar but two guys I like are Cisco who is from Syracuse and is familiar with the new Jags coach and Pinnock is a solid yet unspectacular player for the Giants and was a steady hand back there for them.

Michael Hoecht is a weird fit for the Bills but I have always liked him as a player. When he gets in he seems to be around the ball and is an all hustle kind of guy for a role player.

That’s good to know. It’s such an important position in the McDermott defense. I would love for him to develop because he has the athletic ability to be quite good. The Bills need some insurance though at S either way.

Agreed. It would be a tragic waste and misallocation of resources. Unless we're creating so much cap space that we could fit Garrett, Crosby, and DK Metcalf in on top of Holland 🤣

So speaking for myself as a guy who wants Holland or Andre Cisco this offseason, I am looking for a pure free safety to allow Bishop to play around the line of scrimmage more in the box where I think he will thrive. My thought process is Rapp becomes the third guy, and a dime linebacker. So I’m not replacing Bishop, technically replacing Rapp.

Add him, a CB, a DE and DT would be a huge boost.

Just going to be hard to do this and extend Bernard, Benford, Rousseau, Shakir and retain Hamlin at -$11M already.

Let alone trying to work a Crosby, Garrett trade.

How much money they free up leading up to FA will be a clue.

Yes on Cisco.

It felt like every week in 2023 I looked up and he was taking an interception the other way.

I would break the bank for Holland and a top tier CB. Really infuse that secondary with talent.

S Holland   (Hamlin gone)

CB  DJ Reed   (Rasul probably gone)

Edge

1 of Garrett/Crosby/Hendrickson/Sweat

DT  Draft & or acquire a massive one

I would seriously use our top 2 picks on DT’s this year. Deepest DT draft in a long time.

Maybe a bit of a hot take but if the bills don't resign or extend any of those defensive players, is anyone actually upset? Would the bills be actively worse off?

Before the concussion to benford he would be a must extend but the defenders others meh in my opinion

Errr... he didn't improve in coverage AT ALL.

He improved a bit in the run game but I honestly don't know how anyone can watch what Bishop put out there this year and say "I want more of that."

He had two major blown coverages in the AFCCG. He is a liability out there in coverage.

job 1 is the biggest impact player we can get.  it's pretty clear that player is garrett, or parsons/crosby if they are available or we can't get garrett.  job 2 is cb.  a guy in the draft (via trade up or whatever), or an FA might have to be how we get a CB.  I could see throwing a couple picks early and late at cb perhaps with and eye to getting someone who could also be a FS or nickleback to maximize the chance at burn.  I kinda hope our new d coaching on the back end has a plan to get production out of elam.  i'm not holding my breath but he played with such poor technique in the afc chip game that he can clearly get better with a more cogent scheme and coaching, but I just don't know if he can get good enough

after that, various holes in the team need to be filled.  based on cap, our picks, and what it will cost for garrett, i really don't know if there is room to drop fa money at the S position.  i kinda think our winning a super bowl more or less requires bishop to to emerge as at least a replacement level NFL safety next season.  the near historic awfulness of our secondary this season (less turnovers and our statistical season on D would have been around the worst in team history) coupled with how baltimore was the number one with a gun d last year, then had the worst pass d in the nfl for about 10 weeks, but then turned it all around and were solid again makes me think there are coaching solutions to rapid improvement.  philly was similar, going from about the worst d in the nfl last season to the best this season.  adding garrett would go a very long way to setting our secondary up for success.

a west coast guy playing in miami probably isn't coming to WNY (take a look outside), plus safety is a lower priority

Lower priority than what? I think it was by far the weakest spot on the Bills in 2024 and if you want a "you can win with a weakness in the regular season but it will get exposed against better teams in the playoffs" example then the Bills 2024 safety room is a textbook case. They either need to upgrade 3 spots (and that is on the basis Benford is fine to return) or they need to significant, sure thing, upgrades at FS and boundary corner and then let Rapp and Bishop compete for the SS job.

He started like 4 games. Throw him to the curb, he’s a piece of *****. Wasted 2nd rounder

Others teams put their rookies in week 1, no mention of them all year on this board until they see them in a playoff game and then all the talk is about how we should have drafted them.  🤷🏼‍♂️

we need to replace a starting CB as Douglas will hit FA....Not a starting safety.

I would rather speculate about every single player on the DL

I am not throwing him to the curb. I am saying he wasn't out there because he was clearly a liability in coverage. The idea that just gets better if you stick him out there more.... well it didn't.

He might just be a bad pick. He might turn it around. You get more opportunities as a 2nd round pick than if you were a 5th or 6th rounder. So Bishop is going to get more shots but he is already in a spot where he really needs to start taking them. If he does not win the job in camp next year (and I think he is competing with Rapp not Hamlin or whoever replaces Hamlin anyway... he is a box safety not a center fielder) then the prognosis does not look good.
