K D Posted February 11 Posted February 11 He wasn't not NOT the MVP and when in doubt give it to the QB. The DE's both equally wrecked havoc, it's tough to give it to a DT who played well but had no stats to show for it, Dejean didn't do anything besides the pick 6 that was thrown right to him, and Saquon didn't do anything. SoCal Deek Posted February 11 Posted February 11 It’s the Most Valuable PLAYER…..not the Most Valuable UNIT…or Assistant COACH. I have no problem with the selection. It doesn’t mean that Hurts was the sole reason they won. 1 Quote

The DL dominated and dictated the game. To me, dictating the game is the MVP. But you can't give it to an entire unit unfortunately, so Hurts wins by default. What plays did Hurts have to make? It was 34-0 with seconds left in the 3rd quarter. The defense contributed 14 points, amazing field position, and TOP all night. Quote

No single defensive player impacted the game more than a QB who had 300 yards and 3 TDs... Quote

He received votes. 2 Quote
GreggTX Posted February 12 Posted February 12 Philly's entire DL was the difference. Giving the MVP to Hurts was a slap in the face to the 4 guys that dominated that game from the start. Quote
DCofNC Posted February 12 Posted February 12 (edited) The Eagles D was the key to the game from an obvious standpoint. However, Hurts lead the O to score on the turnover and he himself didn’t turn the ball over when it mattered, plus his timely plays extended series and may be realistically just as important in keeping the ball away from KC. He did everything you could ask of a qb and ultimately that’s the guy touching the ball the most, so yeah he’s the MVP. Edited February 12 by DCofNC Quote

Bill from NYC Posted February 12 Posted February 12 Hurts has spent his entire college and NFL careers on teams that ranged from very good to great. When he was Alabama he was the 2nd best passer on the team, and some Crimson Tide Fans make the case that he was 3rd best. Whatever. He was always a very good, strong runner who made great decisions wrt when to take off and run, and a good passer. I never saw Hurts panic. He is completely calm, smart, and focused, and btw unusually strong. If you put Hurts on the Patriots, Jets, Giants, etc. I don't think that he would fare very well. The Eagles have a defense that gets them turnovers and good field position. Their offensive line is great, as is Barkley. I would kill to have Davonta Smith on the Bills and he is their #2 receiver. In other words, he has everything he could possibly need on the Eagles and in this scenario he is everything they need at QB and more. Is he Josh Allen or Mahomes? No, but who is? This thread asks if he was the Super Bowl MVP. Damn right he was! He ran for 72 yards and a touchdown, and threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns, as well as picking up clutch first downs. The Chiefs took Barkley out of the game and it was up to Hurts to come through which he did, clearly imo, so yes; he deserved to be MVP over any other single player. Jmo. Quote

He is definitely not the passer that Tua is but obviously he is more mobile and, critically, I think he is better mentally. That is his strength. He is better pre-snap, better with protections at the line, a great leader, resilient and just the hardest worker you could meet by all accounts. Would he work on a worse team? Not to this extent, no. But I still think his knowledge of the game and mental resilience would make him serviceable. When he went to Oklahoma after the disappointment of losing his job to Tua in 'Bama and got better I thought he proved a lot to people. I liked Hurts more than most coming out as a result but even I am surprised he has gone on to be a top 10 Quarterback. Just shows if you are willing to work and prepare and can respond to adversity you can go further than it appears your talent can take you. 1 Quote
harmonkillebrew Posted February 12 Posted February 12 I think they've given a defensive player SB MVP much more often than regular season MVP. Von won MVP. There have been 9 defensive MVPs. So closest argument would have been Josh Sweat with 2.5 sacks and 6 tackles. If he had scored a TD or had an INT he might have got it. Quote

I mean they were even talking about Co MVPs for the regular season Quote
Rubes Posted February 12 Posted February 12 Not that it matters, but you youngins don't recall that waaay back in Super Bowl XII (Cowboys stomped the Broncos 27-10, the defense forcing 8! turnovers) they awarded the MVP to two players, Harvey Martin & Randy White from the defensive line. The DL dominated in general, but they gave it to those two. According to history, "The voters actually wanted to name the entire 11-man starting defensive lineup as co-MVPs, and asked the NFL if this was acceptable. The league said no, and so two players were picked for the award." I could have seen something like that happening this year, but maybe it was just too tough to pick two of them. FYI, Denver QB Craig Morton's passer rating for the game was 0.0, the lowest in Super Bowl history. Quote

Einstein Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Turns out he BARELY won the MVP. Only got 60% of the votes. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/jalen-hurts-got-12-of-20-super-bowl-mvp-votes Quote
Awwufelloff Posted February 13 Posted February 13 I was watching some live video of him during the game. The dude is the most calm player I've ever seen. He's not intimated by anyone. He was LOCKED in for the superbowl. Nothing could phase him. He's underrated. I'd highly recommend to go watch some of the behind the scenes videos. 1 Quote
Ray Stonada Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Hurts was dialed in from the beginning, took exactly what was there, and put every throw on the money. He built that 34-0 lead with the perfect rainbow to Devonta Smith, which killed the Chiefs dead. Just would not let them lose. There's no way you give it to Sweat or DeJean when Hurts played that well. Quote
