I hope it's a change. The best thing Nick Sirianni did was give up control of other side of the ball and it put it in the hands of Moore and Fangio. Sirianni is a mediocre coach who hired excellent assistants and let them do their thing with the talent they have. 

 

McDermott needs to do the same. He fully takes on the CEO role that he is pretty good at and lets go of the other sides of the ball. Let Babich and these new hires work together to develop a new identity.

 

Lock McDermott out of the room and let those guys cook.

No news on someone being let go, but we did lose our Nickel Back coach to the Pats, so this seems like a fill in.

I was so glad he left the U because the Hurricanes CB's were a mess with him there(and he didn't recruit well, which matters in college).........so I wouldn't be surprised if he is blamed for not getting better results from the CB room in Buffalo too.   He was supposed to fix Elam with his different than John Butler technique training.

if we can use what we saw on the field as data, we had a horrible downgrade at secondary coaching.

 

our dc was LBs, and the other guy up for the spot was DB coaching.  i'm hoping that the new additions for our d coaching staff pay off quickly, but the immediate info tells us mcd promoted the wrong guy.

It wasn't a great debut for Babich, that is for sure.   I don't know if that means Butler should have been hired though.  They went from the HC calling plays to hiring a new DC so there is a bit of an "OC for Andy Reid" level accountability vibe for whoever takes over the Bills D.   It's kinda' been McD's defense either way.   Eric Washington also got poached and given the DC job in Chicago(and failed).

D.J. Reed is my #1 free agent target and big realistic move for the offseason. Would love to add Holland at FS but believe the cost will be too much.

Was he on their staff when Josh had his perfect playoff game?  Just brining in someone doesn’t mean a defensive philosophy change. Has Mcd changed the prior 8 years,,,,does he have a rep for being open minded and flexible ?  Or would he draft a man corner in the first round , know for being handy and penalty prone in college , and adapt the d around the players strengths , or would he force a square peg into a round hole? Hmmm?  Yeah , nothing matters until next years first game , then it counts and we’ll see.

Lol, yeah, he does—it’s the board members who don’t.
 

Funny how some people here are still stuck on concepts like “McDermott being too conservative” when, statistically, he’s been one of the most aggressive head coaches over the last five years. He’s not just open-minded there—he preaches a Growth Mindset. Ty Dunne dragged him through the mud last year, and McDermott made real adjustments based on the anonymous feedback. People just had to know what to look for. So yeah, he does have that rep.

 

So you expected him to overhaul the entire defense for one player instead of teaching that player the system? So screw the 10 other guys who fit a zone scheme—we’re switching to man because our first-round pick played mostly man at UF? Or maybe they just expected him to learn a new concept? Make that make sense.

I still see Elam as a guy w/ a lot of talent, who was drafted onto the wrong team because of our scheme.  While any good player should be able to adjust to a new scheme - what we run does not play to his strengths.

 

Maybe he could pan out much better in a new system.  I'm really hoping that's what we have in mind w/ this move.

I think that has to be shown on the field. He hasn't swallowed his pride to change anything to combat the Chiefs after all these years. 

 

I hope he is because we need drastic changes from what we've been doing defensively.

This isn't sarcastic - how was his personnel when he was with those teams? Did they have studs across the board? Or is he an Aaron Kromer type on the DLine? If so I am highly intrigued
