Hyde’s position on the practice squad was basically “coach on the field” with no real expectation of play time. And if he wants to chase a ring, that’s gonna be the only way he could do it at this point. Wouldn’t be a big shocker to me if he went that route. Well, you could be right. That makes sense. He's way to young to just retire. Quote

The End I actually thought we had some nice starting position for the majority of the season. McDermott is what McDermott does … mama said it’s always someone else’s fault. come on man. Special Teams haven’t been a very great unit for 2 seasons. Look at the miscues over the past 2 months of the season: - 9 men on the field for a punt block vs LAR - Fake punt conversion versus DEN - long punt return versus KC That’s just what I can think of off the top of my head. It doesn’t take into account Bass’s kicking issues or the numerous screw ups last season. This is a good move 2 Quote

For me there are three possible reasons as to why he said Smiley would retain his job and then fire him a week later. Reason 1.) It was coach speak. This staff has always been tight lipped about the internal going ons so there is no way that Mcdermott would say anything other than an affirming or incredibly vague answer. And he gave both a strangely vague answer and a pretty hard affirmative which to me falls in line with what he says/does. Very much par for the course with McD and how he goes about things. This seems the most likely to me. Reason 2.) McD was in on keeping Smiley but the rest of the staff/leadership wasn't. I don't know who exactly has the power over coaching hires, whether that's McD or Beane or both, but even if they didn't have control over the hires they might have enough of a voice to push McD's hand about it. This seems unlikely as I believe it would add unnecessary friction. Reason 3.) This is my personal headcannon. McD said "...I'm confident that Coach Smiley is going to learn from those situations and plays that came up this year."... What if in his post season autopsies he gets to Smiley and he clearly hasn't learned any lessons? McD just said he was confident in you to learn from your mistakes and here you are, continuing to make them? Begone!... Totally unlikely to have happened but it'd be funny. McD's style with people he likes as humans is to give them time to find a job. Farwell, Frazier, now Smiley. For whatever reason he nuked Dennison and Salgado right after the season. I'll note that we still need a nickel coach. And that Hyde hasn't listed his house for sale yet. 1 Quote

Can you point me at the presser or even about the time frame of the presser so I can go give it a listen? I'll swap you for this video of Dion Dawkins dancing Edit: to clarify, I'm not surprised that Smiley got the axe or in any way saying the Bills shouldn't have moved on from him. I'm just surprised if McDermott explicitly said that Smiley would return as the Bills ST coach next season. Edited yesterday at 10:20 PM by Beck Water 1 Quote
