An edge rusher has been an issue for quite some time and is concerning that it’s still a top need after all the resources Beane/ McDermott have put into the position. Also #1 WR has to be pretty high on the list as well.

Finding a game-wrecking edge rusher in the draft is much like finding a franchise QB prospect; they are seldom found outside the Top Ten, and too frequently, the prospects don't work out to be as good as hoped for.  For a team like the Bills that drafts at the bottom of the first round, that means trading up in the draft to get a premium spot or trading/signing a veteran.  The draft is such a crap shoot, even in the top ten, that I don't think I'd trade up to get in position to grab a top DE/EDGE.

That leaves spending resources on trading/signing a veteran that's already proven as the only realistic alternative.  The veteran is going to cost big $$$, and sometimes that goes south because of injuries as it did with Von Miller.   It's the only thing the Bills can realistically do if they're serious about winning a Super Bowl, so I'm on the "trade for Myles Garrett" bandwagon.

You know there is a difference between free agency and trades?

As it stands right now there is not a dominant difference maker about to hit free agency. That could change. Strange things happen. But seems unlikely.

So if you want a true difference maker then Beane needs to deal draft picks and get a star like he did with Diggs.

Look at last years draft. Not a single player made a difference. 2nd and 3rd round picks barely played all year. Coleman had a couple good games. You can not expect the next draft to find a superstar that contributes right away. If you want that you need to trade some draft picks.

All 4 CAN be done depending on how much Terry wants to pay in Signing Bonuses.  I would ask him "How good would it be to open the new stadium by hanging a Super Bowl Banner?"

You are aware that while you can lower the cap figure of Year 1 with signing bonuses (that you can spread out) - that you can't just make the cap hit 0 or whatever you'd like, right? All 4 of them, even with a lower year 1 number, are going to have substantial hits. You can only lower it to a certain percentage.

For example, last year's biggest WR contract was Calvin Ridley. His Year 1 number was about a 3rd of the rest of the years. That number was still 10. And Higgins is going to be a much bigger contract than Ridley.

Xavier McKinney was the top contract for a Safety. Again, Year 1 was lower than the following years - it was stil 8 million. Holland is going to be about the same.

And that's not taking Garrett or Reed into account. We're at 10+m over right now. We'll come up with space. And we can hopefully do 1 of those big moves. But enough to do all of those? No way. And that's not even taking into account how it would torpedo the cap in future years. Which you can argue he shouldn't worry about - but that's not how Beane operates.

I don't know if you've looked at Tee Higgins' performance over the past couple seasons - but he's been pretty dominant.

I'm figuring we'll get to around 35-37 under the cap after cuts, walks and restructure. Our picks will be 1, 2, 2, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6.   I totally appreciate the argument that Pat gets rid of the ball in 2.2 seconds.  And that truth definitely needs to be factored in high on the list of who we can realistically target.

I'm still a big proponent for going after Maxx over Myles. He'd be less costly from draft capital and salary. And he's a year and a half younger.  And as I brought up back in December that his partner Malcolm Koonce is also available in FA.  These 2 guys are going to take up at least 80% of our cap. And that's OK. But the D starts at the front 4. Everything trickles down from there. Sure I'd love a great db like Reed or Ward? But I'm drawing a line in the sand starting with the DL.

I would like Garrett but that isn't going to help us next year against the Chiefs when we need yet another TD at the end of the game. We either need an offensive threat or a coach that knows what he's doing.

The Bills have 4-5 "starting" needs in my opinion.

  1. Boundary WR- They have to replace Cooper with a good consistent boundary WR.
  2. Elite Pass rusher- Adding in a truly consistently disruptive defensive force on the defensive line is a key point.
  3. Corner - Gotta replace Douglas as the starter opposite Benford.
  4. Run stuffing DT- Jones while he might not be washed so to speak he's not the elite run stuffer he once was, going to need a true one tech next to Oliver.
  5. Safety- Depending on if they resign Hamlin this will be a very key depth need.

Of those needs I think WR and Pass Rusher are going to be the most impactful ones on each side of the ball. The complexion of the offense changed when Cooper was added via trade even if Cooper's numbers weren't huge. They need to replicate the presence of Cooper on the outside. On defense the Bills getting a pass rusher that can be what Von was in 2022 until his injury is critical. Corner and a 1-Tech DT are important needs as well but will have less of an impact if I had to guess.

My hope is that the Bills can resign Hamlin to make safety just a need for development while also addressing at least 1-2 of their other needs via free agency and then trade for an impact pass rusher or WR and use the draft to take care of the rest.

He said FA not via trade.  In regards to FA’s, I don’t think there is any one move that puts the team over the top but DJ Reed or Jevon Holland would probably provide the team the best ROI for what they’d spend.   If the Bills don’t get someone that is of quality that pairs with Benford then defensively we will be right where we were last year.    Getting a quality CB has to be a major priority.
