I know we currently don't have a 3rd round pick due to the Cooper trade, but I was under the impression that if we let Cooper walk that, depending on other factors, it could result in us recouping a 3rd round compensatory pick.

Yeah they’re not very valuable in terms of trade capital. I think if you packaged them together, you might be able to get up into the back end of the 4th if you threw in one of the 6ths.

Depending on how the board shakes out and what they do in free agency, you may want the volume of selections vs. putting three resources into a single selection. Hard to know.

I think the more likely use for these (aside from picking a player) if you package them to move up earlier in other rounds. For example you might package #56 with one of the 5ths to get up to the 53rd pick. Beane has been know to target “his guys” and make the move to go get them if there are other teams to play ball.

We currently have 10 picks. There is just no way they make all 10 of those. There isn’t that many roster spaces to be filled. This is why I think you’ll see them identify who they want early on, and use those later round assets to try and move up to be sure to land them.

The other thing they might do is trade one for an up next year. One of those 4ths was from trading away a 5th last draft day to the Bears.

That would be next year and I doubt he nets a 3rd. 4th maybe.

What do you think we will get?

As others have suggested, Over the Cap currently has us projected to receive two additional 5th round picks (Leonard Floyd, Gabe Davis)

Yes, it was forecasted to be a 4th for Davis and a 5th for Floyd. Unfortunately, Davis was lost for the year a little past midway through the season - so his compensatory will slide to 5.

The picks are:

Round 1 - Pick 30
Round 2 - Pick 56 (from HOU/MIN for Diggs & 5th)
Round 2 - Pick 62

Round 4 (from CHI for 2024 5th)
Round 4
Round 5 (Compensatory for Davis)
Round 5 (Compensatory for Floyd)
Round 6
Round 6 (from NYG for Boogie Basham)
Round 6 (from CLE w/Cooper for 2025 3rd)

Correct, it wouldn't come until next year. But we won't get a 3rd or a 4th. The 2024 campaign was his 10th accrued season. And once you've had 10 seasons, your comp pick maxes out at a 5th.

This was a waste of my time opening this thread.

I actually know less about the Bills picks now before I opened the thread.

Round 5 (Compensatory for Davis)
Round 5 (Compensatory for Floyd)
Round 6
Round 6 (from NYG for Boogie Basham)
Round 6 (from CLE w/Cooper for 2025 3rd)

Will one 5 th be a make up 4th when they should have gotten a 3rd but instead it was a 4th last year

Good wuestion. I guess we will know in March. Thats the reason I didn’t include the Comp picks yet. Really hope one of them is a a 4th.

I think that is exactly what happened... I know we are being mentioned for a 3 or 4 comp pick, but I do not believe we have a 3 this year.

We also may get back a 3 or 4 if Cooper signs as a FA somewhere

That's not how comp picks work. We lost out on a 3rd last year for two reasons. They changed the formula qualifications to include money in deals that they hadn't before. Before that, teams (like us) would carefully construct contracts with void years and incentives that wouldn't effect the cap number and skirt the formula. So when they changed that on a dime, contracts like we did with Floyd were taken into account more than we expected. The other was that Tremaine Edmunds missed time due to injury.

Under the new rules, a 4th is what we were owed. We were far from the only team that fell victim to the new rules. It was going to be a 4 for Davis, but will fall to a 5 because of him going on IR at about the halfway mark of the year. Floyd is a 5th. It will be 2 5th's. There's nothing in the formula of calculating a players compensatory worth based on fans perceived slights in previous years.
