Maybe, I dunno, hire a few Defensive PLAYERS, the ones who can either rush the QB or be within either the TV picture or 5 yards of the WR!

Little updates, like that.

That's not until free agency.

Oh, I agree that’s not all on him, and he’s just another piece here. Jacksonville was a disaster all around. But…does make me question his judgement.

well because his name came up in this thread already, Spagnuolo was a disaster in St.louis and seems to be fine in KC.

He is a defensive line coach at heart.  He has helped/coached/ been a part of some good groups in his stops in atlanta and new orleans.  He is here to help coach the Defensive line.

also, Mcdermott and or beane seem to really like what payton did with his staff in new orleans since a number of them keep ending up here.  So maybe there is something specific that Nielsen does well with lineman that Beane/mcdermott like and want him to coach here as senior defenisve assistant.

Or maybe he just missed getting up in the morning and not being around someone named Josh Allen.  Anything is possible

I hope the plan is see how the first 5 or 6 games go and if we aren’t making people punt, make this guy the DC

In January 2026 when we are wondering how Josh scores 37 and we allowed highest on average ppg again in the playoffs to lose again so we fire another DC and promote another DC and keep McDermott.

There are only a few defenses you can run in the real world.  Its not as complicated as so many people make it seem.

The Bills do not have an X's and O's problem.  They have a Jimmy and Joe's problem.  This offseason will hopefully take care of that for the most part.

Tell that to the 4th and 5 play that left Josh and our entire line confused. KC blitz 2 guys I believe, and 3 got through. Online whiffed on 2 of them. Not to say we don't need better Jimmy and Joe's, but I believe you are over simplifying it. If that's the case, the bust rate for QBs, would be far less than what it is. Within a single formation, tons of wrinkles can be added.

That being said, there's nothing that excites me about this hire.

I’m not the one for that lol I was on a rampage asking for McDermott to be gone. I just know that isn’t happening. I need a new voice in the room for the defense. I’m absolutely the last guy you need to make that point to. Every single problem we have is the defense. The scheme and the guy coaching it. The reason I most want a quick hook with Babich, is he is McDermott jr. I want new ideas in there

Isn’t this the dude who looked completely clueless on the sideline against Josh earlier this year in the Jacksonville game? Big mustache who came into the game thinking man was a good idea and then refused to come out of man as his team was being eaten alive? Color me unimpressed.

Allen will sometimes do that to you. Vic Fangio had no answers. Sometimes it happens.

They ran man because that’s what they do. He’s likely joining Buffalo to help defensive line and pressure packages. That’s his expertise. Bills needed to upgrade defensive line coaching.

you are talking about a single play or single formation.  I was pointing out scheme.  Anyone can run the same blitzes.  Teams copy each other every week.  Without the better players you can not have the same success.

and again, if Cooper doesn't slip he is off to the races and spagnuolo's zero blitz gets wiped out.  Maybe the bills win maybe they don't.  It happens.  Chiefs fans would have been screaming about the play and why did they gamble so big if they lost.  But It doesn't matter, Cooper slipped and was caught from behind because of it so its another check mark for spagnuolo.

The bills could have run the exact plays in the same situations and because of the personnel differences had completely different results to which I guarantee 90% of this place would be flipping out that they gave up a big play and gambled.

So we hire a pass rush specialist / DC from Packers and now a DL Coach / DC

Lot of focus on the DL

One can ONLY assume this means Myles Garrett is our primary target 😎

I can see Terry Pegula meeting with McDermott after the season asking why we don’t blitz like that in crucial situations?

A nickel zone defense would be perfectly fine if we had the front 4 to disrupt top shelf opposing QBs. As it is, we don’t YET*, and we don’t have a fleet footed secondary, so they play soft and give up easy completions. If the new guy specializes in pressure packages, that will assuredly help Babich. His blitzes lack creativity and almost never get home. Hearing the Bills OL comment about how they were outsmarted at such a critical part of the game has to weigh heavily with the defensive staff to start producing a similar ability.

This is a good sign and tells me McDermott is not ideologically rigid. Just being willing to listen to new ideas tells me a lot

Just anyone from the outside to start changing the ideas in the Defensive room. Anything to get away from this zone

I've been waiting for some sort hint at innovation....for quite some time.  Why can't we have coaches who want to be ahead of the curve?

MCD: get backup DC in place.  Scapegoat Babich.  Blame "new scheme" for defensive failures next year.

Fair enough. Don't get me started on that 3rd and 5 screen. At least to Cooper. I would have preferred a quick slant, or something else, where we are on the move. Same thing with the last play. Spags has a long history of being ultra aggressive in key moments. We had no answers for that blitz. I don't like that Shakir lined up 11 yards behind the line of scrimmage, basically taking our best weapon out the play. Amari was running 1yd drag route, and 2rd receiver was running a 3yd drag. No slants on the play. No matter who we add in the offseason, we have to get better at situational football. Different teams/circumstances, but at the end of the day, 2 years in a row when the game is on the line. The Chiefs defense have put their foot on our neck on the last drive of the game, the way they do against everyone else.

Having Prime Cam Jordan, Sheldon rankins, Marcus Davenport, demario davis, david onyemata and Trey Hendrickson I am pretty sure helped.

Of course it does, but Dawkins went from being good to all pro and Spencer Brown from decent to near elite under Kromer.   Coaching matters.

Wasn't that already true though when he hired Babich over John Butler.  I mean him and butler were High school teammates and have known each other forever.  If McDermott wanted a puppet to do what he tells him and then take the fall when it fails that would seem like the perfect guy.

He didn't go that route.

Very true.

hopefully they draft some excellent players for these guys to help grow like Brown and Dawkins.
