Came in with Doug Marrone, but stuck around through Rex Ryan's tenure. Local guy, somewhat interesting hire with a myriad of experiences.

In some ways it's good that there is some Rex influence, some Jim Schwartz and some Mike Pettine

Had no idea what happened to him. He’s an assistant HC for Minnesota. Pretty cool considering how dirty the Browns did him.

With a very likely switch to man cover, will this mean Elam is still a Bill next season. It IS his forte

Is it?  KC intentionally picked on him and the knock coming out of Florida was he had issues with holding.

Our base D rush is the LDE crash inside and get swallowed up while the RDE loops wide and runs past the QB. The two DT's get stuffed and we pray the QB overthrows or the receiver drops the pass. In the process, we ignore screen passes. On key third downs, we play even softer. It is the way.

Because he was laying Zone. Hey, I don’t know. But we invested a 1st Round pick on him and DB’s are Seans’ forte. We’re going to need cover guys with our new D schemes.

With the DB coach hire, Ryan Nielsen and Rebrovich it looks like McDermott is bringing in reinforcements.  I find it interesting that absolutely no one has been fired on the defensive side.

Let's see if Pellegrino can help him

I was just thinking about Mike Pettine the other day.  And Hikee Johnson.

Well, they picked on him in zone coverage. Maybe they'll pick on him in man coverage too, but there is a difference in assignment and technique. He's more comfortable in the latter as opposed to the former, it could make a difference.

If we only had a laces out coach

The Rams used to have a coach whose only job was to keep McVey from running onto the field. Remember, there is no salary caps for coaches.

But, the knock on him coming out of College was holding penalties. So is he really that good at Man?  When a player is a healthy scratch as much as he has been, that a very bad sign.

Sauce Gardner is a 2x First-Team All-Pro and Defensive Rookie of the Year, yet he’s been labeled “too handsy.” Does that make him bad in man coverage?

You draft for traits and develop the player. It doesn’t always work out, but they don’t have the benefit of hindsight like we do.

One is Elam and one is Sauce...

Weaknesses

  • Skinny legs with below-average build.
  • Unnecessary disregard for technique.
  • Plethora of holding and interference calls over three years.
  • Grabs and holds when pattern matching goes awry.
  • Some hip tug when trying to flip and run.
  • Footwork needs to become a priority.
  • Average gather-and-go quickness from his pedal.
  • Inconsistent coming to balance in pursuit.
  • Catch-and-drag tackler.

Weaknesses

  • Loses his leverage unnecessarily.
  • Allows a little too much clearance early in the route.
  • Needs better open-and-sprint timing when squatting underneath.
  • Vertical specialists can overtake and stack him.
  • Inconsistent digesting route combinations.
  • Too much panic and grab in his 2021 tape.
  • Can improve his eye balance between the man and the ball.
  • Doesn't play to his size in run support duties.
  • Inconsistent coming to balance as open-field tackler.

I will see you and raise you: One was Defensive Rookie of the year and all pro. The other can't even get on the field since he is a healthy Scratch under TWO different DB coaches.

I don't get love for Elam, other than the fact Beane wasted a 1st round pick on him.  I figure this change in philosophy is his last chance.

One was dropped into a scheme that allows him to continue to play man coverage, the other was asked to learn zone coverage and hasn't been able to. The gamble on traits and ability to learn didn't pay off.

We haven't seen Elam play man coverage; that's the whole point lol

There's no love, ***** happens.

The "wasted a 1st round pick" rhetoric is tiresome. ***** happens, if GMs batted 1.000 personnel decisions would never matter. It's hard as ***** and you're trying to boil it down to nothing.

If he were a one off then I wouldn't have an issue. But Edmunds isn't even here, Oliver shows up half the time, Elam is SO FAR a Bust, Kincaid has regressed and Coleman... Who knows yet.

That said, I do appreciate the research you put in on that, thank you. And FOR NOW, we will agree to disagree. And hey I would LOVE to eat Crow at the end of next year and please be willing to serve it up! 🙂

This healthy scratch argument is way over blown!

He was a scratch because he didn't play ST.  CB's play most of the game unless they get hurt, so need the backups for ST's play.  When the starter did get hurt, who was brought in, Elam!

Who’s fault is that? I know a first round CB doesn’t want to play ST. But come on. Guy can’t cover kicks and that’s okay? He needs to do more,,,, than be a bum
