thenorthremembers Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago Are we really relying on stats that includes teams from 1960-2000 when teams ran the ball all the time? They were down three with a chance for a game winning drive. Quote

( For his standard) His ypa drops considerably past the wildcard. Fyi burrow has basically the same numbers if you include all his playoff numbers in every round. Burrow has a slightly higher ypa in the AFC championship at 6.6 you really can't improve on 15TDs/2 turnovers 1 1 Quote
JimmyNoodles Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago This is what is called a PROCESS. McD is working on getting this down to 32PPG. 3 Quote

Our general lack of a deep threat and the fact that the defenses get better the further you go in the playoffs are a bigger factor. Defenses basically have taken away his running game and our OC’s haven’t adjusted well at all. Look no further than 1-4 on the rush push. Bottom line, our defense gets worse and opposing defenses get better. This is overall a personnel and coaching issue 1 Quote

Hard to imagine a team with such a porous defense winning it all, ever. Must have just gotten lucky, as they likely will become again in a few weeks. Or, maybe both the Chiefs and Bills have two of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, with almost unstoppable offenses? Bingo! No matter how you configure the defense a top offense like KC with Mahomes will still get their points. The onus will be on Allen and the offense to finish those potential winning drives the next time they’re in those situations. Learn to finish! Offense has to take it. Quote

folz Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago And how many playoff teams had to face an offense the caliber of Kansas City with Goat-candidates Reid and Mahomes in 4 of those 5 losses? Kansas City has averaged 30 points in the playoffs under Reid and Mahomes (vs. all teams). The year they scored 42 on us (in overtime)---two unstoppable offenses that year---they also scored 42 on the Steelers in the playoffs. I know we didn't face them in the playoffs in 2018, but that 2018 KC squad was the 3rd highest-scoring offense in NFL history. I know the last couple of years they haven't been quite what they were back in 2018, but we are still talking historic stuff over those 5-7 years overall (in which 4 of the Bills playoff losses fall). Not to mention a little help from the refs here and there. For what it's worth, McDermott's total playoff points against average is 28.3 points. (Still not great, but again, weigh in 4 years vs. KC) Over the last three seasons, the average score for playoff winning teams is 31 points. Over the last 5 years, it is 30 points. Playoff teams score a lot of points these days. No question that McDermott and the Bills need to find some defensive answers vs. KC (I think a stud pass rusher would go a long way) and it would be really nice to see the playoff defense improve overall---but I think the stat is a bit misleading. Not many teams have had to face a dynasty that many times in such a short span. Manning's Colts only lost to the Pats 2 times in the playoffs. Marino's Dolphins lost to the Bills 3 times over 6 years. Oakland lost to the Steelers 3 of 4 years in the 70s. But how many teams have been up against what we have? Quote
DaVinci Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago This isn't rocket science. You have the ball the last 2 playoff games at the very end of the 4th quarter. You have "the MVP, The Unicorn" get a touchdown! 3 Quote

If it IS true, it is surely THE primary reason that Josh Allen doesn't have a ring yet. For a defensive minded head coach who relentlessly preaches accountability, self-scouting, and growth mindset, this is just mind numbingly bad. Unforgivable, even. What needs to happen for this to change? IS it a coincidence that we have been out-scored in all 5 loses? Quote

Sure, KC's offense was great from 2018-2022, but they've been quite average in 2023 and 2024. They weren't even a top 10 offense this year in the regular season and we still got shredded in the playoff game. All 4 times we've played them in the playoffs they scored the most points in their postseason run against us (pending for 2024 if they score more than 32 against PHI). The Bills offense only has 1 turnover in those 4 games so it's not like our DEF is being put in tough spots. If the Bills DEF was merely 'really bad' instead of 'historically bad' we'd be 3-1 against them in these playoff games. Quote

Nihilarian Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago When you think about what those late 1980s and early 1990s Buffalo Bills teams had on defense, they went for the smaller, faster DL players who could penetrate. Their entire scheme was based on getting a lead and allowing their pass rush to get after the quarterback. That Buffalo pass rush was so good because not only did they have RDE Bruce Smith rushing, but they also had LOLB Cornelius Bennett on the other side. Quite the squeeze. The current Buffalo Bills have neither, and they used to have a top secondary with Micah Hyde, Jordon Poyer, and Tre White. They had a rookie starting at safety against the Chiefs. Then Christian Benford suffered another concussion in that game. INJURIES have derailed the Bill's defense in the last few years. Not only did the Bills not have a strong pass rush they were also lacking in the secondary. NOW, that the 2025 Buffalo will be somewhat out of cap hell with the 30 million hit from Diggs gone and probably Von Miller too. The Bills should be able to make some moves to improve the team's defense. First on the list might be to hire someone who can identify top pass-rush talent in the draft. I feel they already have that in McD for the secondary. Then there is always free agency or a trade. Just think though as bad as the defense was banged up in 2023 and had a rookie DC calling plays this year they only lost to KC by slim margins in close games. AGAINST THE BEST TEAM IN THE NFL THE PAST FIVE SEASONS. So the Bills are closer than some think. My take is, that this team did an amazing job this season considering the circumstances and situations. Wasn't it supposed to be a rebuilding year? When will that oblong spheroid finally bounce the Buffalo Bill's way...all the way to the Super Bowl for a win? Have a priest perform an exorcism? A witch doctor makes a Chiefs doll and sticks pins in it? Call a priest, a Rabbi, an Imam? Magic Mirrors, talismans...what? 1 1 Quote

IMO the Bills defense is overrated and has been for awhile. It is built for the regular season when they mostly play average to below average offenses for the most part. It almost always gets shredded against the best teams. Baltimore's offense had no problem moving the ball on them. Quote
QB Bills Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago (edited) One day, the majority of Bills fans will realize that McDermott was just as incompetent as the rest of the drought era coaches but lucked into a unicorn QB. Spare me with the fluke 2017 season. A decent coach and this is already a dynasty with a quarterback like Josh Allen. The Chiefs hadn't scored over 30 points all season and totaled 212 yards of offense the week before. Yet on Sunday, they scored at will. McDermott is Andy Reid's biatch. Last year and this year the offense had the ball with a chance to win with a TD or tie with a fg and couldn’t do either. The defense has to play better but so does the offense in those situations. 1 Quote
colin Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago why didn't i think of this! lol mcd's ds have been hot dog water for the bills in every playoff (possible exception vs jaxonville, which is shocking given how weak that roster was). i think the most charitable take is that his d needs good secondary and an elite front to work. on the flip side, allen is so shockingly good in the playoffs every time he plays he extends a record. i'll say once again my dream for the bills this offseason, short of a never gonna happen thing of getting bellickeck. 1. deep threat boundry wr w sick talent. if we had that, we extend a couple drives, score more points, and beat kc this year and last. two chips in our pocket. diggs was never this by the way. 2. better secondary. ours is just too bad. stud cb, really solid value cb, something at cb. and at least two new S. i have hope still for bishop, but hamlin and rapp are not it. 3. pass rush. i actually see this as a lower priority than above, houston and denver have the best pass rushes, and sick secondaries, and they got eaten buy kc and us respectively. we need help here, but im a bit torn. i will lean a bit to saying go get a monster because mcd has had monster d's in carolina with hardy being a total terror on the edge. 4. just talent. lots of young guys. we at least showed willingness to sell out vs the run, play man, and blitz this season, so maybe we will have some scheme diversity? make it so you never have aj klien, hamlin, elam, morrow, an injured douglas, or any of the total cheeks street free agents we've had in the DL rotation getting serious burn on your team. Toohill and i don't even remember the name at DT were getting long burn from us this season. that's way too crappy. put a good cb, a monster DE, and throw rookies all over our D and by the playoffs we might have a little gas to cook with. maybe force 2 punts vs baltimore and 3 or 4 vs kc even! add dk metcalf or tee higgins for josh, and instead of hollins getting the deep looks, it's a world beater. championship! 1 Quote
