Absolute difference between a coordinator and a HC. Spags and Fangio failed as head coaches too, and I sure wouldn’t mind them running my defense.

It wasn’t the offense that prevented us from beating the Chiefs. We averaged close to 30 all year and Josh loves Brady’s play calling. Our defense didn’t play well and the Chiefs got 30 once all season in regulation. The Texans defense dominated their offense. We were supposedly rebuilding with a shuffled O line and without a #1 or #2 receiver. Winning 13 and 2 playoff games in his first full season is not grounds for bringing in a guy who crashed and burned for 2 teams calling plays.

I know its not going to happen but Id like Pederson...for OC. Brady did a good job of course but lets face it, its a matter of time before hes gone. Enough of these young "wonderboy" OCs. They come in...it takes time for them to learn on the job, then when they get their feet under them...poof they are gone. And now Joe Webb from UB's name was floated if Brady left. Oh good, a young guy with even LESS experience than Brady and Dorsey had. This team is right in the middle of a super bowl contention window. Enough with the "Western NY Offensive Coordinator Junior Jobs Program."

Id love to have our "offensive version of Spagnuolo." An older (but not too old) coach who has a lot of experience and past success in the league, maybe had a run at HC but it didnt work out or it did and now he wants to settle in, and work on this talented team to offer knowledge and most important, continuity.

Of course people will laugh becuase of Pederson's record last year in JAX, but look at the resume. The guy has a ton of experience and success as an offensive coach in the NFL.  https://pro-football-history.com/coach/963/doug-pederson-bio

I like the thought but seems like a personality clash and McD's insecurity wouldn't allow it to work the way it should in theory

Leslie Frazier would like a word.

McDermott runs the whole system, and the system is predicated on coordinators deferring to him and running the team his way. Zero chance he brings in anyone that could possibly be considered an equal, especially not if that person wanted to try a different approach.

Wholeheartedly agree. Plus there’d also be an experienced former HC who has won a SB in the building. He’s not going to set himself up to get “Doug Marrone-ed”.

So to me McDermott’s and Pederson’s relationship to Reid is quite different.

McDermott was on Reid’s staff for ten years starting as a quality control coach and working up the ladder. But he was only DC for a year and a half before he got fired. He learned under Jim Johnson who got sick with cancer and was named interim DC when Jim was sick. He was then named DC after Johnson passed, which I think Andy had to do. Reid fires him a year later. Again he is spending all of his time on the defensive side of the ball. Aside from Johnson, McDermott’s other influences are Ron Rivera, Dick Jauron, Spags, and John Harbaugh. All in all 10 years working for Andy with a year and a half as DC.

Pederson played for Reid for 4 years, in Green Bay and in Philadelphia. When Reid got his first head coaching job the first free agent he gets his hands on is Pederson to help him build culture and so he can be the bridge quarterback for whomever they drafted, turned out to be McNabb. After retiring, Pederson winds up working for Reid and working up the ladder, offensive quality control, quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator. He follows Reid to KC. In 2015, after a terrible start, Reid gives play calling duties to Pederson and they win 10 games in a row which earns Pederson a shot at his own HC gig where he wins a Super Bowl. So Doug Pederson played for Andy for 4 years and coached under him for 7, in total 11 years working together.

I would venture to say, McDermott’s and Pederson’s experiences under Andy Reid were quite different. In simple terms, one guy coaches defense and one guy coaches offense. Numbers are just that, numbers, but when you dig into the details, if there is a guy out there who has deep knowledge on how Andy Reid thinks, it’s probably Doug Pederson, and that was the basis of my opinion here.

Sean actually started as Andy's personal assistant. If there is anyone who knows how Andy Reid ticks it is Sean McDermott.

Oh and of active Head Coaches in the NFL the guy with the best record against Andy Reid is also Sean McDermott.

Whatever people think about Doug Pederson, he has been around Reid and Spags for a very long time. He gives you a guy who has won Super Bowls, and has deep, deep knowledge of Andy’s offense.

He could serve a multitude of roles, not only could he be a sounding board for Joe Brady and Josh Allen, he could be even more useful to Bobby Babich by working with him on ways Reid will attack his scheme. He could help identify the shortfalls we have and help the defense get prepared for their arch nemesis.

Pederson is not going to get a HC job in this cycle, and if there is anyone who really truly knows how Reid thinks, it’s him. Going all the way back to his days in Green Bay as Brett Farve’s backup, as well as coaching under him in various places, Doug may be able to get us over the hump.

I understand that this brain trust isn’t going anywhere, so I am trying to think of ways we can improve this year on the coaching side, bringing in a hired gun like Pederson is something I hope the Bills consider. It also helps Doug rebuild his reputation after being so terrible in Jacksonville. He is said to be a pretty loyal guy, so is he willing to help McDermott and company overcome his mentor in Reid? Only time will tell.

That’s never going to happen,

Bills need someone that just isn’t gonna be a McD puppet. Someone he respects and has worked with to give a different perspective is not a bad idea.

I agree it is needed, but it won’t happen. In fact, it’s been heading in the opposite direction for years. That isn’t going to change. McDermott has systematically removed everyone that isn’t willing to fall in line with his directives. This team is fully built and run in his image now and that’s not changing.

I should point out that everyone being on the same page it’s generally a good thing. It’s the page that’s been chosen that I have an issue with.

Pederson or anyone else would be a good idea.
McDermott may want to do it only with his friends, but it has become perfectly clear that that way is not enough.
It needs to change.

Pedersen, Nagy, Bienemy, Rivera, Shurmer, Bowels (sure he is the HC of the Buccaneers, but what is that getting him??? I’m sure he’d love to be the asst. to the assistant’s assistant Head Coach in Buffalo), Childress, and Leslie Fraizer would probably come back, right? All these guys are available (except Bowels, but I covered that).

While we’re at it, let’s get Frank Reich back home to Buffalo and maybe he can get ol’ Jimbo to finally do some coaching. I hear Marv is looking pretty spry and is tired of Chicago. You know, Big Mike McCarthy is considering a year off, but why not throw him a line and see? Did I forget anyone? What the hell is Fitzpatrick doing? He loves Buffalo. Let’s get him in here, too.

Reed could teach some separation skills.

I’m not sure that Brady really needs the help.  If anything they’d be wise getting a new voice for the defense

Joe Brady has like 8 plays, he needs the help. A new defensive scheme is more important, but that will never come while stuck with mcd

Agreed here...  I think the defense needs to be re imagined... the concept of spotting a team 30 minutes and adjusting to moderate improvement at half time isnt good enough, I was less than impressed game to game with the lack of anticipation from Babich regarding what the opposing offense was going to do to exploit our flaws.. he adjusted well at half time but someone needs to anticipate from the get go what their offense was going to do and that didnt happen...

Additionally, the regression of the individual player... Oliver, Jones, Bernard, Douglas, Epenesa, and the stagnation of others like Rousseau makes me wonder if the scheme didnt fit the players, or Development was not effective... thats a lot of players some of the Veteran Young... that should be improving...  To me this makes me see through the well our players werent good on defense (which in some regard is true especially at Safety) and that is the problem... to say yes.. there is truth there... but the coaching was also not acceptable..  just MO

Its not going to change. The last time McD hired an experienced OC, he tried to kill him after his defense lost the :13 game. McD is going to play it safe and only hire coordinators and assistants he has complete control over

I see your point but how many older guys are OCs in the NFL right now?

14/27 currently employed OCs are aged 40 or younger. Only 5/27 are over the age of 45.

Why is that the case? Two reasons:

1. The best OCs become Head Coaches and coach offense well enough to keep their jobs even when their team doesn't have top end QB talent - Reid, Shanahan, McVay.

2. Offense in the NFL is constantly changing and you can become out of date quite quickly.

Pederson failed twice to fit into category #1 and is very much IMO in category #2. Ran among the least shifts and motion in the entire NFL in 2024 and the offense looked positive Jurassic in comparison to what a lot of the better offenses are running. Pederson won his Superbowl by being at the cutting edge of the RPO era going back 7 or 8 years. That is now pretty par for the course and almost everyone runs RPO as a base component of their offense and defenses have found the adjustments to the extent that it no longer looks the unstoppable weapon it once did.

This is an overreaction.  The game against Kansas City might have been Brady’s worst game yet they still scored 29 points.  Buffalo’s offense is really good and has been scoring points all season.   I don’t mind the idea of getting a veteran offensive voice in the room, but I also don’t think it’s something he needs.

What would help more would be getting Brady a few WR’s that actually separate and can stretch the field vertically

Probably wont be a popular opinion here, but I was hoping Brady got a HC job because I think Pederson would have got the OC job.  I think this team needs more experience with their coaches.
