Opinion: Bills SHOULD hire Doug Pederson as assistant HC

Whatever people think about Doug Pederson, he has been around Reid and Spags for a very long time. He gives you a guy who has won Super Bowls, and has deep, deep knowledge of Andy’s offense. 
 

He could serve a multitude of roles, not only could he be a sounding board for Joe Brady and Josh Allen, he could be even more useful to Bobby Babich by working with him on ways Reid will attack his scheme. He could help identify the shortfalls we have and help the defense get prepared for their arch nemesis.

 

Pederson is not going to get a HC job in this cycle, and if there is anyone who really truly knows how Reid thinks, it’s him. Going all the way back to his days in Green Bay as Brett Farve’s backup, as well as coaching under him in various places, Doug may be able to get us over the hump. 
 

I understand that this brain trust isn’t going anywhere, so I am trying to think of ways we can improve this year on the coaching side, bringing in a hired gun like Pederson is something I hope the Bills consider. It also helps Doug rebuild his reputation after being so terrible in Jacksonville. He is said to be a pretty loyal guy, so is he willing to help McDermott and company overcome his mentor in Reid? Only time will tell.

I’m not sure that Brady really needs the help.  If anything they’d be wise getting a new voice for the defense

McDermott runs the whole system, and the system is predicated on coordinators deferring to him and running the team his way. Zero chance he brings in anyone that could possibly be considered an equal, especially not if that person wanted to try a different approach.

I love when people propose an 'Assistant HC'.

 

It's almost always a fan being like "Damn, I'm stuck with this coordinator or Head Coach I don't like. How do I deal with this? Okay, what if we add ANOTHER coach that hopefully negates them?"

 

Like you said "this brain trust isn't going anywhere". Adding another coach in an assistant role isn't going to change how Joe Brady runs the Offense or how Sean McDermott and Bobby Babich runs the Defense. And he's not going to provide some kind of "eureka" moment for Sean.

Pedersen, Nagy, Bienemy, Rivera, Shurmer, Bowels (sure he is the HC of the Buccaneers, but what is that getting him??? I’m sure he’d love to be the asst. to the assistant’s assistant Head Coach in Buffalo), Childress, and Leslie Fraizer would probably come back, right? All these guys are available (except Bowels, but I covered that).

Id me more interested in rex ryan as assistant.  Maybe Chan gailey as screen game coordinator, dick jauron as punt quality analyst. greg williams as bounty gate coordinator. Get the old band back together.  Maybe even sign peterman as qb2 then have greg take out josh in practice

Exactly...this albeit a good idea, would be struck down immediately by Sean feeling threatened by Doug.  Sean insists to have full control over his failed Defense- Scheme.

So to me McDermott’s and Pederson’s relationship to Reid is quite different. 
 

McDermott was on Reid’s staff for ten years starting as a quality control coach and working up the ladder. But he was only DC for a year and a half before he got fired. He learned under Jim Johnson who got sick with cancer and was named interim DC when Jim was sick. He was then named DC after Johnson passed, which I think Andy had to do. Reid fires him a year later. Again he is spending all of his time on the defensive side of the ball. Aside from Johnson, McDermott’s other influences are Ron Rivera, Dick Jauron, Spags, and John Harbaugh. All in all 10 years working for Andy with a year and a half as DC.
 

Pederson played for Reid for 4 years, in Green Bay and in Philadelphia. When Reid got his first head coaching job the first free agent he gets his hands on is Pederson to help him build culture and so he can be the bridge quarterback for whomever they drafted, turned out to be McNabb. After retiring, Pederson winds up working for Reid and working up the ladder, offensive quality control, quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator. He follows Reid to KC. In 2015, after a terrible start, Reid gives play calling duties to Pederson and they win 10 games in a row which earns Pederson a shot at his own HC gig where he wins a Super Bowl. So Doug Pederson played for Andy for 4 years and coached under him for 7, in total 11 years working together. 
 

I would venture to say, McDermott’s and Pederson’s experiences under Andy Reid were quite different. In simple terms, one guy coaches defense and one guy coaches offense. Numbers are just that, numbers, but when you dig into the details, if there is a guy out there who has deep knowledge on how Andy Reid thinks, it’s probably Doug Pederson, and that was the basis of my opinion here.

Absolute difference between a coordinator and a HC. Spags and Fangio failed as head coaches too, and I sure wouldn’t mind them running my defense.
