I agree with your general view of non-pessimism, but in your synopsis you suggest we’re not far away but go in to essentially say we have to replace/upgrade every defensive position.

Beane never shows his hand, but I suspect he’s going after a stud DE or WR by trade or FA.

Not sure.   Not much out there that wouldn't cost a fortune.

How much do we need to change? How close are we?

Here's some interesting stats for you.

The Bills and Chiefs have played each other 9 times in the Allen/Mahomes era. Here are their total points in those games (combined):

KC: 243 total points

BUF: 242 total points

If you were to say, what were their total points at the end of regulation in those 9 games:

KC: 237 points

BUF: 242 points

If you take out the 2020 season (when the Chiefs were just a better, more experienced team than we were), then since the 2021 season (the last 4 years), we have played the Chiefs 7 times. The total combined scores for the teams in those 7 games are:

KC: 179 points

BUF: 201 points

Hard to fathom.

As to next year, my priorities would be: a proven, stud pass rusher added via trade or FA; I think Carter will develop into a really nice DT, but I wouldn't mind seeing some young, talented beef to replace/spell Daquan; Fix the safety position (however that happens); WR; Corner depth/improvement; LB depth.

I think if we can add some speed to the room and keep the core of Shakir, Coleman, Samuel (Maybe) Hollins, we would be ok.  I like what Sean said about not needing the speed to be say a #1 WR, but we need to stretch the field.

There's two options when it comes to Samuel.

1.) The most likely is that he's here. Whether that's on a re-worked deal or pay cut to provide us a little space or he's just here on the same deal he's on.

2.) We trade for a WR and Curtis Samuel is part of the trade.

It would cost us 11m+ in Dead Cap to cut him this year. That's why the "out" in his deal is looked at as after this upcoming season. Cutting him isn't a good option.

Curtis Samuel IS a WR with Speed. I hope this year was just a combination of the turf toe nagging him throughout the year and a lack of experience with Josh.

But speed for the sake of speed is not enough. Like I said, Samuel has that. You still need the Offensive Coordinator to run plays that stretch the field and/or that guy with Speed to beat the coverage. And I fear that Brady simply didn't utilize Samuel's speed the right way.

And if it's the case, getting another Speed WR isn't going to change anything.

As for as personnel, stop drafting rotational linemen please?

We aren't "drafting rotational lineman". McDermott's Defense uses heavy rotation. That's why guys are rotating. It's his philosophy and that's really not going to change.

We need:  A stud pass rushing DE

I like how the post title says "not that much, actually" and then you casually slip this little item in.

Just the defense. The defensive scheme and philosophy to something that teams do in this era…that’s it. Our offense is elite. Our STs is not great but they have been all but phased out. Bring in a lab aggressive DC from outside and we can win the Super Bowl

FA priorities:

If Benford is ok - a CB 2.  Still no update today on him?

Massive DT.

I'm fine with Bishop Rapp Hamlin - but good with adding one more.

DE - like Floyd last season.

Draft priorities:

BPA

BPA

BPA

BPA

We aren’t in a position to draft for need.  Don’t force draft a position.  Don’t draft the 6th best corner if a top safety or LB is available.

i hardly even care to read through this thread. the problem is that we are actually better than them RIGHT NOW. We have our best offensive line in 30 years, and still, we can't come up with 1 yard on several different tries, despite being over 90% on similar plays all year long.

people will go on about why we didn't try something different. There is a mindset you are allowed to play with when you have a 90% plus play in your pocket. When that goes away, there is not a replacement for it. There is not a backup option that is also "automatic."

To me, the number one thing we need to do is diversify our 1 yard package, while still somehow maintaining close to the same success rate we had all year up until the chiefs game.

Or we just need to be so much better than them that the small things don't matter.

How much needed?  A defense that gives up 4 less points against KC in the playoffs.  It's a fact.

How about a defence that just doesn’t hand out 7 points on every opening drive, will that do? 🤔

Kicking the tires of Bishop?  He was a second round draft pick and is basically being gifted the starting Safety role?

I don't picture him starting the season, unless he really improves in the offseason. Him starting in the AFCCG was a clear function of our lack of depth at the position. But, I certainly don't think he'll be cut. Do you?

No.  In fact if he isn’t starting it’s a bust of a pick.  Another 2nd round bust…..

But I don’t expect that.  I bet he makes a big leap and becomes our Blakenship.

the thing that sucks though is, there’s no way we’ll be this healthy going into the playoffs next season.  I Mark-Messier-Guarantee it.

There’s also no way we will sweep the division. The freebie years are up.

You don’t draft a safety that high for him  to start in year 2 - especially considering the other players at his position.   Plus he played fairly well toward the end of the season and McDermott has said that he has improved since his start in Houston.

I 100% guarantee that they are penciling Bishop is as starter at safety.  The only way he won’t is an injury or bad preseason.

I remember when people said there was no way the Bills were winning the division last season?

In year-two of his career, I don't believe his draft position matters at all. If he's ready to start, he will. But, frankly, he looked like a liability on Sunday, and he was targeted often. And, honestly, I don't really feel like Hamlin is starting quality, either. IMO, Rapp is the only starting quality safety on the roster. Safety is definitely a position in dire need of upgrades to my mind.

He wasn’t a liability though and he’s played well enough to start next season.  Go ahead and bookmark this comment.  Cole Bishop is going to be one of the starting safeties next season.
