Johnnycage46 Posted January 28 Posted January 28 I have read the Dune books, most Star Wars books, LOTRs, etc. Anybody have some good recommendations? I am seeing The Expanse book series recommended a lot online? Anyone read it and recommend it? Any other good series? Quote
Rockpile233 Posted January 28 Posted January 28 I highly recommend “The First Law” trilogy from Joe Abercrombie. (Fantasy) If you like that there is a followup trilogy and several other offshoot novels in that universe. 1 Quote

Seeing a lot of "gritty" and "dark" associated with it....which I like. Quote
Simon Posted January 28 Posted January 28 I don't know fantasy but here's some good sci-fi: Richard K Morgan's series featuring Takeshi Kovacs (dark, violent, wonderfully written - don't judge it by the Netflix series which was horrifically bad) John Ringo's 3 book series regarding the Posleen War (well-written military sci fi by a guy with a great sense of humor) The Mongoliad series (multiple authors) more history-based but with sort of a fantasy feel. David Weber's In Death Ground and The Shiva Option (standards sci fi space opera with a naval feel) 1 Quote
DrW Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Jeff VanderMeers "Southern Reach" tetralogy, classified by some as "Weird Fiction" (it is actually much more SF than Fantasy). The first part, "Annihilation", was excellent (the 2018 movie is also highly recommended), parts two, "Authority", and three, "Acceptance", were very good, but IMHO did not reach the standards of "Annihilation". However, in the very recent (and by most readers and critics, unexpected) forth part, "Absolution", VanderMeer is again at his best. 2 Quote

Thanks Doc, I didn't realize he'd written a follow up. Glad to hear it's worth the read; I'll be putting it on the list. 🤙 1 Quote
PastaJoe Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Any of the alternate history series by Harry Turtledove. My favorite was the WWII series. You can’t beat Nazis and Aliens in the same series. 1 Quote
Captain Hindsight Posted January 30 Posted January 30 If Star Wars is your thing, I’m currently reading “Catalyst”. It’s a prelude to the movie Rogue One and its excellent 1 Quote

Doc Posted January 30 Posted January 30 The Ender's Game series was big back in the day and the movie was pretty good. 1 1 Quote

Usually when football season ends I get back into reading to pass the time lol. 23 minutes ago, Captain Hindsight said: If Star Wars is your thing, I’m currently reading “Catalyst”. I’ve never been as much of a reader but my goal is 25 this year Not sure when it came out, but yeah it’s about Galen Erso. I’m like 100 pages in but it’s really good 1 Quote
Wacka Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Mostly humor, but I loved The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. 1 Quote
